TO THE READER.
Learned Reader, these works of our Clement, whether genuine or attributed to him, now appear in a favorable light, to be highly esteemed by all students of ecclesiastical antiquity. These writings, which previously lay scattered here and there, hiding in the corners of libraries and lying buried almost entirely in isolation, we have been the first to collect into one volume and present in a new light. It is indeed a great labor, but one for which, with God’s approval, we trust we have not been found inadequate. Let this be our reward from you: that you acknowledge we have served the Christian religion well. Farewell, and look favorably upon our endeavors.
