TO THE READER After the volume was completed, there came into our hands a book, long sought in vain from every quarter, entitled TOMOS CHARAS [Volume of Joy], transmitted to us from Athens by the learned Mr. Sgoutas. It contains Photius's Letter to the Church of Antioch, which is not printed elsewhere; we have taken care to add this at the end of this volume, together with our own translation. Photius says that he accepted the episcopal burden laid upon him with difficulty; he issues a profession of the orthodox faith.
