* For the greater utility of the readers, it has been decided to publish here the historical books which describe the preceding and subsequent eras, and which for a long time have already coalesced as if into a single body, so that they cannot be separated from one another without mutual loss. Following Theophanes, a most holy and most learned man, are Leo Grammaticus and those authors who have continued the history both of Theophanes and of Leo up to the middle of the tenth century.
