We have reprinted the Works of Theophylact according to the edition which was published at Venice in the years 1754–1758 by the most learned men, at the house of Joseph Bertella, in the Hertz press. It consists of four volumes of the largest size; but the editors of that edition, because they despaired of finding Theophylact’s commentary on the Psalms, substituted the commentary of Euthymius Zigabenus, which had never been published in Greek elsewhere, in order to complete the fourth volume. Hence this inconvenience arose for us, that our volumes no longer correspond to the volumes of the Venetian edition; for, having removed Euthymius, as the chronology requires, we had to form our four volumes out of three and a half Venetian ones; whence it happens that the first Venetian volume is continued in our second, the second in our third, and the third and the first part of the fourth in our fourth and final volume.
