and communion, and the synaxis by which also to other A and of a certain Evagrius, being of the ancients—for those who attempt to celebrate mysteries, by which there is a memorial of Him who emptied Himself without emptying, and took flesh and suffered for us, according to that divine command; and by his own operation, those most divine things are performed and deified, the bread and the cup; and that very life-originating body and blood are performed, and their ineffable participation and communion is granted to those who approach piously. All those, however, who do not confess and believe as the Holy Spirit proclaimed through the prophets, as the Lord ordained when He appeared to us in the flesh, as the apostles preached having been sent by Him, as our Fathers and their successors have taught us, but rather have either begun their own heresies, or have followed those who have badly begun them to the end, we reject and subject to anathema.
We also receive and embrace the holy and ecumenical councils: the one in Nicaea of the three hundred and eighteen God-bearing Fathers against the God-fighting Arius, who impiously dragged down the Son of God into a creature, and divided the Godhead worshipped in the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit into created and uncreated; the one after it in Constantinople of the one hundred and fifty holy Fathers against Macedonius of Constantinople, who impiously dragged down the Holy Spirit into a creature, and likewise divided the one Godhead into created and uncreated; the one after it in Ephesus of the two hundred Fathers against Nestorius, patriarch of Constantinople, who rejected the hypostatic union in Christ of His divinity and humanity, and who by no means wished to call the Virgin who truly bore God the Theotokos; and the fourth, the one in Chalcedon of the six hundred and thirty Fathers against Eutyches and Dioscorus, who wrongly dogmatized one nature in Christ; and the one after it in Constantinople of the one hundred and sixty-five Fathers against Theodore and Diodorus, holding the same views as Nestorius, and through their writings supporting his views, as well as those of Origen and Didymus.
We also embrace all the holy councils gathered from time to time or place by the grace of God for the confirmation of piety and the evangelical life; among which are also those convened in this great city, in the celebrated temple of the Holy Sophia of God, against the Calabrian Barlaam, and against him who followed after him and held his views, and who with guile hastens to defend those same views, Akindynos—who speak against the common grace of the Father, the Son, and the Spirit, and the light of the age to come, as also the righteous shall shine as the sun, as also Christ foreshadowed on the mountain of the Transfiguration, and in short, they dogmatize that every power and energy of the B tri-hypostatic Godhead, and everything that differs in any way from the divine nature, is created; and these people also impiously divide the one Godhead into created and uncreated, and those who piously honor that most divine light, and every divine power and energy, as though nothing of those things naturally pertaining to God were recent, they call ditheists and polytheists, just as Jews, Sabellians, and Arians call us. But we renounce both these and those as truly atheists and polytheists, and we sever them completely from the fullness of the pious, just as the holy catholic and apostolic Church of Christ does through the Synodical Tome and the Hagioritic Tome, believing in one tri-hypostatic and omnipotent Godhead, which in no way falls from its unity and simplicity on account of its powers or hypostases. For all these things we await the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the age to come. Amen.
REPORT OF THE HIGH PRIESTS to our most powerful and holy mistress and lady, the Lady Anna Palaiologina.
Most powerful and holy mistress and lady, we the high priests who are seated in our cells, enclosed, the [Metropolitans/Bishops] of Ephesus, of Cyzicus, of Alania, of Christoupolis, of Aprus, of Lopadium, having received from the grace of the all-holy Spirit the yoke of the Gospel, and having the obligation to oppose those who stand against the Gospel of Christ—both the intelligible and the sensible demons—and to remind your most pious and holy imperial majesty, and to stir up your piety to purge every height that is raised against God, we remind you already and report that the one now D patriarchizing, enslaved to the terrible and mindless passion of avarice, has acted like a hireling in the Church of Christ, gathering silver and gold for his sons and daughters, contrary to the rulings of the holy [Fathers] and the sacred canons of the holy Church of Christ, selling the widowed churches without apostolic mandate, selling the exarchates, trafficking in abbacies, proceeding by the way to the worse, and judging what is just, and judging crookedly the ecclesiastical and political matters that arise, just as his double and contradictory notes on many things are,
