A blessed Gregentius having predicted to him this departure; and he was buried in the royal city of Tephar of the Homerites. Serdidus, his son, took up the scepter of the kingdom, and was in all things as his father had been, following in the footsteps of the blessed Gregentius.
The archbishop of holy memory, having shepherded the flock of Christ excellently and diligently, and having built upon the foundation of the apostles, and having performed many miracles and signs to the glory of God, both in his life B and after his falling asleep—shortly after the death of the king, he himself also laid aside the present life, having obtained an eternal kingdom, on the nineteenth day of December. He was buried in the cemetery of the Great Church, there being gathered there bishops, priests, deacons, and countless monastics at his funeral, all greatly mourning and lamenting and grieving over the death and loss of such a man. For he had been a father good to all, distributing to each what was appropriate and fitting, and having become a mediator, deeply compassionate and merciful, between God and men, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be glory, and power, and honor, and adoration, now and always, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
EPIPHANIUS, BISHOP OF CONSTANTINOPLE. FOUR EPISTLES OF EPIPHANIUS, BISHOP OF CONSTANTINOPLE, TO POPE HORMISDAS.
(These are extant among the epistles and decrees of Pope Hormisdas. See *Patrologia Latina* vol. LXXII, cols. 494, 497, 507, 523.)THE SENTENCE OF PATRIARCH EPIPHANIUS AND THE SYNOD CONGREGATED AGAINST SEVERUS AND PETER.
(MANSI, *Concil.* vol. VIII, p. 1137.)The holy synod said: Even if that which was brought forward by the most venerable abbots was something new,
for the holy monasteries, as put forward for the most holy Churches, it is absolutely our duty to accept it and to share in and strive with their pious zeal. But now, we observe that this has already been carried out according to right reason by our most blessed Fathers and brothers; and thus it would be a very great fault not to follow those who have endured no small labors for the common peace of the most holy Churches, and who have shone forth in the great and patriarchal sees. From all that has been read, therefore, we have found Severus and Peter to be apostate and severed from the whole Catholic Church, and indeed from the orthodox faith itself, and to be ensnarers of simpler souls and abettors of the impious heretics, inasmuch as they are entangled in their various errors. Moreover, they held the sacred decrees of our holy Fathers as nothing, daring to do things forbidden to them in a reckless manner, and for these reasons they have fallen under the read-out priestly judgments. Wherefore, following these, we likewise consider the aforementioned Severus and Peter—who are neither restrained by the eternal condemnations and anathemas pronounced against them by so many holy Fathers, nor have they become in any way more moderate, but on the contrary have increased their own boldness against all the most holy Churches, fill- B ing them, as much as in them lay, with disturbances, and, as the divine Scripture says, reaping the fruits of their own labors—as having placed themselves in the order of the heretics whom they loved; and the very anathemas which they sought to devise for the insult of our holy Fathers and the subversion of the faithful, they have incurred upon their own heads, Walking, as the prophet says, In the light of their fire and in the flame which they have kindled. C And in this, too, following the aforementioned holy Fathers, by this our moderate sentence against them, we anathematize the same Severus and Peter, of whom one unlawfully snatched the see of the Theopolitans, and the other that of the Apameans, so that those who have hoped in Christ and belong to the Catholic Church, knowing this, may not fall into them through ignorance of what has been canonically decreed against them; but may know, according to the evangelical and apostolic instruction, that A man that is an heretic after the first and second admonition avoid; and that one ought not to say to such a one, God speed. For he that saith to him, God speed, is partaker of his evil deeds. It is also manifest that Zoaras the most impious is under the same condemnation, as are all who set their own heretical D conventicles and rebaptisms against the venerable altars and baptisteries. And in a similar manner we anathematize the impious writings of the aforesaid Severus. For in like manner, as the divine Scripture says: To God are hateful both the impious and his impiety.
