CHRONOLOGICAL RE-EDITING OF ALL THE MONUMENTS OF CATHOLIC TRADITION THAT HAVE EXISTED THROUGH THE FIRST TWELVE CENTURIES OF THE CHURCH AND BEYOND, according to the most accurate editions, collated both among themselves and with some manuscript codices, most diligently corrected; continually illustrated with dissertations, commentaries, and various readings; increased by all the works discovered after the most extensive editions which are owed to the three latest centuries; endowed with particular analytical indices following individual volumes or authors of any moment; adorned with chapters duly arranged within the text itself, as well as with titles distinguishing the upper margin of individual pages and signifying the underlying material; amplified with works both dubious and apocryphal, yet possessing some authority in order of ecclesiastical tradition; enriched with more than two hundred indices, but especially with two immense and general ones, namely of subjects, by consulting which, whatever not only such and such a Father, but even each of the Fathers, without any exception, has written on any topic may be seen at a single glance; and of Sacred Scripture, from which it may be easy for the reader to discover which Fathers, and in which places of their works, have commented on individual verses of individual books of Scripture, from the first of Genesis to the last of the Apocalypse.
A most accurate edition, and one easily to be preferred to all others, if one considers the clarity of the characters, the quality of the paper, the integrity of the text, the perfection of the correction, the variety as well as the number of the reprinted works, the form of the volumes which is very convenient and consistently similar throughout the whole course of the Patrologia, the low price, and especially this collection, unique, methodical, and chronological, of six hundred fragments and minor works hitherto scattered here and there, but gathered for the first time in our library from works and manuscripts pertaining to all ages, places, languages, and forms.

MIGNE, Editor of the Universal Library of the Clergy, OR OF THE COMPLETE COURSES FOR INDIVIDUAL BRANCHES OF ECCLESIASTICAL SCIENCE.The Patrologia, like the Church itself, is divided into two parts, namely the Latin and the Graeco-Latin; the Latin, now entirely written out, stands in its massive bulk of two hundred and twenty volumes, and costs one thousand one hundred francs. The Greek has been sent to the press in a double edition; the first includes the Greek text with a Latin version alongside, and will perhaps exceed the number of one hundred volumes; the second, however, exhibits only the Latin version and therefore will be contained within about fifty volumes; each Graeco-Latin volume is sold for eight francs, and each purely Latin volume for five francs only: but in both cases, in order for the buyer to enjoy the benefit of this price, it will be necessary to purchase the entire collection, whether Greek or Latin; for otherwise, the varying prices will equalize the size and the difficulties of each volume.
