Most mss. *athroan*; but ABGHS *athroon*. *Ho autos poiētēs e. e. m. g. dokein* G. This passage presents no small difficulty, since at first sight...
it is uncertain whether the relative pronoun should refer to the word *hodos* or *kakia*. But Basil, in the words immediately following, *the same poet said*, intimates that he is adopting the opinion of Hesiod. From Hesiod, therefore, must be sought the interpretation of Basil’s words. Behold the passage from "Works," verse 285: *But it is possible to choose Vice even in crowds / Easily; the way is short and she dwells very near.* The word *naiei*, which means to dwell, must have as its subject not *hodos*, the way, but *Kakia*, Vice, as a personified being. Moreover, since Hesiod has not yet made mention of the way that leads to Virtue, this is not a discussion about the two ways in relation to each other, nor about the proximity of Vice and Virtue, but about the vicinity of the seat of Vice, which concerns us. Ginius ruined the image and the sense by interpreting it thus: *It is easy to accumulate vices. Near their seat is a narrow way.* For *athroan*, which all editions of Basil have, I read *athroon*, in accordance with the five manuscripts mentioned above. The sense demands an adverb that corresponds to the adverb *hiladon* used by Hesiod.

Col. 572 C. *hekista ge* E. Ibid. C 3. *peripesonta* M; *aidesthai* R; *aidesai* U, but in the margin A indicates that it should be added, *aidesai pros* O. The word *aidesai* has become obsolete; *aidesthai*, as one manuscript of the fifteenth century and a scholiast of the sixteenth read it, is no longer in use; there is, therefore, no reason why we should prefer the former to the latter. Boissonade, however, thinks *aidesthai* should be restored. *Aidesai* enjoys an active sense and signifies to gain reverence for oneself. *Aischunen ophēnai* sounds like "to appear shameful." Therefore, literally: "So far is he from appearing naked and doing anything shameful." — *Ton strategon tōn Kephallēnōn*. The island of Cephallenia, near Ithaca, was the chief part of Ulysses’ domain; therefore, in Basil, he is called the leader of the Cephallenians. The matter here concerns Nausicaa, the daughter of the king of the Phaeacians. Cf. Odyss. VI, 127. Ibid. C 4. *tosouton dein* S; *phanenta monon, oude aischunen* GH; *tēn basilida phanēnai monon* M. The seat of the Phaeacians was the island of Corcyra, now Corfu. That they were given over to pleasures is attested by their king, Alcinous, addressing Ulysses (Odyss. VIII, 248): *Dei d’ hēmin dais te philē kitharis te choroi te.* [We care for nothing else but to enjoy banquets, music, and] dancing. [alt-version omitted] According to Aelian (Hist. div. VII, 2), the Phaeacian life was a soft and effeminate life. Horace, when he was in doubt as to where he should make his home between Baiae and Gabii, writes to Vala (Epist. XV, book 1) that he should report to him: *Tractus uter plures lepores, uter educet apros; / Utra magis pisces et echinos aequora celent, / Pinguis ut inde domum possim Phaeaxque reverti.* Ibid. 8. *eis ekeinon* EGILS. In K the scribe took *Kios* for a proper name, for which he rewrote it on the edge of the book, as is the custom to rewrite the names of authors cited in the text. Claudius de Pontoux, an old French interpreter of the year 1561, also believed *Keios* to be a proper name; for he interprets: *Céus sophiste*. Clement of Alexandria cites the verses of Homer to which Basil here alludes; they are: "Gods did not make him either a digger or a plowman, nor in any other way wise in any art, but he failed in every art." Plato attributes the *Margites* to Homer (Alcib. II, t. II, p. 147 ed. Serrar.); Aristotle also, without questioning it like Basil, assigns it to Homer (Poet. c. 4). In the same place Aristotle says that the *Margites* was a certain comic satiric poem akin to the *Iliad* in its tragic mode. Lucian teaches that men who are foolish and stupid are designated by the name *Margites* (Hermot., t. I, p. 545; Philopseud., t. II, p. 465, ed. Salmur.).
