Perhaps you will wonder, benevolent reader, why, while in all the volumes of St. John Chrysostom that both precede and follow this one, the Latin version accompanies the Greek text column by column, in this our edition of the same holy Doctor, the Latin page is placed only next to the Greek page. The reason, and indeed the only one, was that before we had conceived the idea of compiling the entire tradition of the holy Fathers of the Greek Church, we had already, fifteen years ago, separately published the works of St. John Chrysostom in Latin only, and had committed them to fixed type. As affairs stood thus, and since it was neither possible to move the fixed type we had on hand, nor in our intention to destroy the nine volumes of this purely Latin edition which had already been entirely committed to permanent type and had cost more than sixty thousand francs, we luckily found this method—though not without labor and expense—of adapting them to this new edition, which thus turns out enriched in both the Greek and the Latin language.
