Critics have long since taught that the eighth book of the Stromata is either entirely lost, or, if the title of what is extant is genuine, it is certainly imperfect. We now have this Vatican fragment of the eighth book, which is to be added to the parallels on pages 643, 751, 753. Clement of Alexandria, I believe, contradicts those who maintained metempsychosis—a fable which Diodorus Siculus (I, 98) records that Pythagoras drew from nowhere else but Egypt, with whom are to be compared Herodotus (II, 123) and Origen (Contra Celsum I, 20, 32). For how much the Greek poets, philosophers, and craftsmen borrowed from the Egyptians, Diodorus Siculus tells at length (I, 96 sqq.), as do Herodotus (II, 50, 85); Clement of Alexandria (Strom. I, 15, 16; VI, 2, 4); [and] Eusebius (Praepar. evang. I, 6; III, 4; X, 4 sqq.). Angelo Mai, Script. vet. vol. VII, p. 88.
From the eighth book of the Stromata of Clement.
God made us when we did not exist before; for if we had existed before, we ought to know where we were, and [in what manner] we existed, and how and why we have come here. But if we did not exist before, God alone is the author of our creation. As, therefore, He created us when we were not, so also He saves us who have been created by His own grace.
