CIRCA MEDIUM SÆCULUM.

AMPHILOCHIUS OF SIDE, BISHOP.

NOTITIA.

(Oriens Christianus, vol. I, col. 998.)

Amphilochius of Side was famous in the fifth century. To him, Sisinnius of Constantinople and his synod wrote in the year 426, just as they did to Benerianus (otherwise known as Valerianus) and the other prelates of both Pamphilias, concerning the Massalians; Photius recites the address of these letters in his *Bibliotheca*, codex 52. Mention of these is also made in the first general synod of Ephesus, col. 809. Furthermore, Amphilochius of Side attended that same first general synod of Ephesus, in which he gave judgment against Nestorius and confirmed the Catholic faith. In the year 449, at the spurious second synod of Ephesus, he yielded everything to the desires of the impious Dioscorus. However, he seemed to rectify this evil deed two years later at the Council of Chalcedon, consenting by his vote to the deposition and condemnation of Dioscorus; but he also subscribed to the decrees ratified by the synod, particularly in the sixth action. For although his name is absent from the Greek records of the subscriptions, as is the case with many others, it is nevertheless read in the Latin copies of them: "I, Amphilochius, Bishop of Side, defining, have subscribed." In the year 457, Emperor Leo sent sacred letters to him, just as he did to other metropolitans, seeking their opinion regarding the murder of St. Proterius of Alexandria and the authority of the Council of Chalcedon, addressed "to the most reverend Amphilochius, Bishop of Side." Evagrius, in *Ecclesiastical History*, book 2, chapter 3, says that he alone of all responded to the Emperor such that, while he condemned the crime of the murder of Proterius, he nevertheless would not admit the Council of Chalcedon. Eulogius of Alexandria, however, in Photius, codex 299, bears witness that subsequently he embraced the definition of the council once more.

FRAGMENTUM.

Amphilochius of Side, whom they say was the only one to have acted with an intrepid spirit, in a letter written against the synod to Emperor Leo. They will take refuge with certain teachers who have preached two natures.
