Palestine, in the province of Mesopotamia, and in the Antiochene territory. For in the maritime region of Phoenicia many A cities fell, that is to say Tyre, Sidon, Berytus, Tripolis, Biblus, and Botrys, and other cities; and to speak precisely, one hundred and one of the surrounding towns collapsed, and a great multitude of men and beasts perished with the cities themselves. In the city of Botrys, a certain portion of the mountain adjacent to the sea, which is called Lithoprosopon, was torn away and fell into the sea, forming therein a harbor within which very large ships could find anchorage.
SUPPLEMENT TO THE WORKS OF AMMONIUS OF ALEXANDRIA
*Certain items from the fragments of Ammonius of Alexandria on Daniel were left out by the negligence of the typesetters. Since it is no longer possible to replace them in their proper place, we have taken care to have them conveyed here.
32. “In the power of the heaven,” etc. Among the angels and among men. 34. How he was humbled because of his arrogance, he says this, by those things which he suffered, admonishing his hearers.
CHAPTER V
2. “He spoke in the taste of the wine.” The licentiousness of Balthasar reached its height, and drunkenness drew him into such blasphemy; for the love of pleasure follows the intemperate. For just as virtues make use of one another, so also do vices follow in the wake of one another. 8. “They were not able to read the writing.” Through three different manifestations Daniel triumphs over the magi, because they knew nothing true to say, but only deceived the simpler folk through falsehood: through their inability to know what Nabuchodonosor saw in his dream regarding the image; through their hearing the dream of the tree and being unable to interpret it; and now through their being able neither to read the visible letters, nor even to see them—how were they feigning B oracular powers, claiming to see things to come? Which is the property of God alone.
22. “Have you not known all these things?” He shows him to be very wicked, as one sinning with knowledge.
25. “The writing which is inscribed.” If the unworthy person who drinks wine that is merely common out of sanctified vessels meets with such a penalty, that he should fall from his kingdom and be killed, of how much greater punishment are they worthy, who unworthily drink the mystical wine, which sanctifies even those very sacred vessels? For against those who fall from the kingdom of the heavens themselves, there follows an unceasing death, the unquenchable fire of Gehenna; thus does the example of Balthasar provide understanding.
CHAPTER VI
1. He who prays fervently stands before God; thus also Anna, the mother of Samuel, standing before God, accomplished the object of her prayer. Daniel, being one of those in power in Persia, performed the service of prayer three times a day, so that he might C teach us to see things to come; which is the property of God alone.
condemns the idle who do not do the same. But A if one asks, saying: "How was it possible for one occupied with affairs, and circulating in the imperial palaces, to do this absolutely every day without yielding and without failing, at the third, sixth, and ninth hours?" it must be said that he either performed the prayers in his mind when it was not possible to leave the house, or when it was possible, he performed not only the prayers of the sixth hour, but also those of the third, which he was obligated to perform bodily.
12. "Decree of the Medes and Persians." B He said specifically, "whom thou servest continually," in order to show that he bore witness because of his piety toward God, and that everyone knew that he prayed to God constantly; for which reason he was also plotted against.
23. "That he believed in God." This is the perfect life: to please God in faith and virtue, but also to be blameless before men.
24. "They were cast in." This happened for the fear of the many, so that they might not attack C the saints; yet it is likely that they also rejoiced, as their rival had been removed from their path.
14. "He sealed." When they had obtained, through the promise, the pledges they desired, then they also made the accusation.
