have illustrated Gaul with their doctrine and piety, that they were sent or succeeded the same. For it is evident both from the epistle of the Churches of Vienne and Lyons to the Churches of Asia, which Eusebius recites, as well as from Pothinus, Irenaeus, Benignus, Andochius, Thyrsus, Felix, and many others sent by the blessed Polycarp from Asia into the Gauls as teachers of Christian piety, that an exceptional bond of love and intimacy had been forged between the Gauls and the Asiatic Christians.
"Immense as God is." Whatever is preached here concerning the divine immensity, power, and providence is directed, whether against the ravings of the Gnostics, or against the opinions of the Gentiles concerning the origin of the world and blind fortune, which they fashioned as a goddess, [that is] blindness.
"Indeed, when power is free." From many places in the third, fourth, and fifth books, it appears that Irenaeus was an eminent champion of our free will; and this is most fitting, so that he might refute the impieties of Simon Magus, who denied the same, and of Florinus, who attributed the cause of sins to God, not to the free will of men.
*From the annotations of John Ernest Grabe on the same fragment.*
"Immense." Feuardentius published this together with the former fragment received from N. Fabrus, yet he did not indicate who prompted it. Had he done so, I might perhaps have found the Greek somewhere and been able to provide a better translation and the genuine sense. But to tell the truth, these things are highly suspect to me, nor do they seem to be of Irenaeus himself.
B
Thēsis (Thēsis).
Maximus cites this in the said place with this preface or inscription: "Of the holy Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons, disciple of the holy John the Apostle and Evangelist, from the discourses to Demetrius, Deacon of Vienne, concerning the faith, the beginning of which is: 'Seeking God, hear David saying.'" C It is manifest that Irenaeus is here incorrectly called a disciple of the Apostle John; but it is not certainly established whether the discourse or discourses "On the faith" ascribed to him are genuine, since mention of them occurs neither in Eusebius nor in any other of the ancient writers. That this is evident from the fact that Feuardentius, or rather N. Fabrus, from whom he received this saying, wrongly wrote "Demetrium Diacopum a Vienna" for "Diaconum", and called the discourse "On fire" (de igne), because he perhaps read *puros* (*πυρός*) in place of *pisteōs* (*πίστεως*).*Annotations of Fr. Feuardent upon the fragment cited by the author of the Questions and Answers to the Orthodox*.
Page 342. "Not to bend the knee." Tertullian mentions this rite also, shortly after Irenaeus and Justin: "We consider it wrong to fast on the Lord's Day [Sunday], or to worship on our knees. We enjoy the same immunity from the day of the Passover until Pentecost." D Jerome expresses the same in almost the same words in his *Dialogue against the Luciferians*; furthermore, Augustine in Epistle 119, chapters 15 and 17, and Maximus of Turin in Homily 1 on Pentecost.
In which he also makes mention of Pentecost. The observance of this day, although nowhere commanded in the express letters of the New Testament, is nevertheless truly apostolic, since on this holy day the Holy Spirit was sent upon the apostles and the first Christians with wondrous and ineffable gifts, which would sanctify the beginning of our mother the Church.
Then, as is read in the Acts, Paul crossed from Europe into Asia, so that he might celebrate the feast of Pentecost in Jerusalem with blessed James and the brothers. And Epiphanius, *against the heresies* 75, teaches that this is rightly to be understood concerning the Pentecost of the Christians. For what were those things then, with the shadows and figures of the Jews, of which he was such a great expurgator? Of this feast, as an apostolic tradition, Clement of Rome, *Constitutions*, book V, chapter 21, and Ignatius to the Philippians, also make mention before Justin and Irenaeus; and afterwards, as we were saying, Tertullian in his book *On the Soldier's Crown*; and finally Augustine, Epistle 118.
"On which we do not bend the knee." Assigning the reason, Jerome writes that Pentecost is a time of joy and victory, in which our knees are not bent, nor are we bowed down; but we are raised up with the Lord to the heights of heaven. Augustine subscribes to this in Epistle 119, chapter 15, as do all those who have subsequently designated the reasons for divine offices and rites. At other times, Christians not only sometimes expanded their hands to heaven during prayers, but also, at times folding them and beating their breasts, with all submission of mind, falling on their knees and faces before God, they made supplication to God. "When have droughts not been repelled by our genuflections," says Tertullian? And in the book *Against the Jews*, chapter 10: "In cases of alarm, we must commend our prayer with our knees indeed placed, and hands beating the breast, and face groveling on the ground." And again, recounting and explaining the most pious ceremonies during prayer, he says: "Looking into heaven, with hands expanded, because they are innocent; with head uncovered, because we are not ashamed; finally, without a prompter, because we pray from the heart," etc.
*Annotations of the same.*
"Blessing." Would anything proceed from this apostolic man that did not breathe the piety of the apostles' breast? For these words, which are cited by Damascene, recall Paul saying: "Bless those who persecute you; bless, and do not curse." And proposing himself as an example, he says again: "We are cursed, and we bless." And the leader of the apostles, Peter, likewise commands not to return evil for evil, but on the contrary to bless. Thus also Christ our head, "when he was reviled, did not revile," etc. Whether it is ever permitted to pious men for just causes to curse someone, that is, to utter reproaches and insults against him, we have discussed sufficiently broadly in our *Commentary on the Epistle of St. Jude the Apostle*, verse 9.
"Even though there is danger of destruction." Indeed, God is most present to His own when He is thought to be absent; and He snatches them from the greatest perils when it seems that it is over for them. The Israelites at the departure from Egypt are witnesses, as are David, Jonah, Susanna, and others without number. Hence the excellent oration of Philo the Jew to his fellow tribesmen: "It is necessary to be of good courage, O Jewish men, because the divine aid is present when human aid is wanting"; in his book *On the Embassy to Gaius*, and in Eusebius, *History*, book II.
