Chap. 1, 1. And it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth of the month, and I ^A was in the midst of the captivity by the river Chobar, and the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God. 2. On the fifth of the month, this was the fifth year of the captivity of King Joacim, 3. the word of the Lord came to Hezeciel, the son of Buzi, the priest, in the land of the Chaldeans, by the river Chobar. 3. And the hand of the Lord was upon me there. 4. And I looked, and behold a tempestuous wind ^B coming out of the north, and a great cloud in it, and brightness about it, and fire flashing, and in the midst thereof as the appearance of electrum in the midst of the fire, and brightness in it. 5. And in the midst thereof the likeness of four living creatures: and this was their vision, there was the likeness of a man upon them. 6. And every one had four faces, and every one four wings. 7. And their feet were straight, and the sole of their foot was as the sole of a calf's foot, and sparks like the appearance of glowing brass; and their wings were light. 8. And the hand of a man was under their wings on their four sides: and they four had their faces and their wings. 9. Every one went straight forward: whither the spirit went, they went, and they turned not when they went. 10. As for the likeness of their faces, they had the face of a man, and the face of a lion on the right side of those four, and the face of a calf on the left side of those four, and the face of an eagle over those four. 11. And their faces, and their wings were stretched upward; two wings of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies. 12. And they went every one straight forward: whither the spirit went, they went, and they turned not when they went. 13. And in the midst of the living creatures was the appearance of burning coals of fire, as the appearance of lamps, and it went up and down in the midst of the living creatures, and the brightness of the fire, and the fire went forth as lightning. 14. And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning. 15. Now as I beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with its four faces. 16. And the appearance of the wheels, and their work was like unto the appearance of a sea, and the four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the midst of a wheel. 17. When they went, they went upon their four sides: and they turned not when they went. 18. Also their rings were high and dreadful; and their rings were full of eyes round about them four. 19. And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up. 20. Whithersoever the spirit went, thither the spirit went, and the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of life was in the wheels. 21. When those went, these went; and when those stood, these stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up together with them: for the spirit of life was in the wheels. 22. And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the colour of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above. 23. And under the firmament were their wings straight, the one toward the other: every one had two, which covered on this side, and every one had two, which covered on that side, their bodies. 24. And I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the Almighty: when they went, the voice of their speech was as the voice of an host: and when they stood, their wings were let down. 25. And there was a voice from the firmament that was over their heads, when they stood, and had let down their wings. 26. And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it. 27. And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about. 28. As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about.

^A This was the vision of the likeness of the glory of the Lord: and I saw, and I fell upon my face, and I heard the voice of One speaking.

Cap. II, 1. And He said to me: Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak to thee. 2. And the spirit entered into me, and set me upon my feet, and I heard Him speaking to me. 3. And He said to me: Son of man, I send thee to the house of Israel, to rebellious ones, who have rebelled against Me; they and their fathers have acted perfidiously against Me, even unto this day. 4. And the sons are hard of face and stiff of heart: I send thee to them: And thou shalt say to them: Thus saith the Lord. 5. If perhaps they may hear, or fear, for they are a rebellious house, and they shall know that a prophet is among them. 6. And thou, son of man, do not be afraid of them, and be not dismayed at their face; because they are in the heat of madness, and they will rise up against thee round about, and thou dwellest in the midst of scorpions: fear not their words, and their face do not dread; for they are a rebellious house. 7. And thou shalt speak My words to them, if perhaps they may hear, or tremble; for it is a rebellious house. 8. And thou, son of man, hear what I speak to thee: do not be rebellious, as the rebellious house: open thy mouth, and eat what I give thee. 9. And I saw, and behold, a hand extended to me, and in it a scroll of a book. 10. And He spread it before me: and there were written in it the things that were on its front and on its back: and there was written in it lamentation, and a canticle, and woe.

Cap. III, 1. And He said to me: Son of man, whatever thou shalt find, eat: eat this scroll, and go, and speak to the sons of Israel. 2. And He opened my mouth, and made me eat this scroll. 3. And He said to me: Son of man, thy mouth shall eat, and thy belly shall be filled with this scroll given to thee. And I ate it, and it became in my mouth as honey for sweetness. 4. And He said to me: Son of man, go, get thee unto the house of Israel, and speak My words to them. 5. For not to a people deep of lip and heavy of tongue art thou sent to the house of Israel: 6. nor to many peoples of strange speech, or strange language, nor to those whose language is hardened, whose words thou shouldst not understand: and if I had sent thee to such, they would have obeyed thee. 7. But the house of Israel will not want to listen to thee, because they will not want to listen to Me; because all the house of Israel are contentious, and stiff of heart. 8. Behold, I have made thy face strong against their face, and I will fortify thy contention against their contention, 9. and it shall be; I have given thy forehead harder than flint: fear not them, nor be dismayed at their face, for it is a rebellious house. 10. And He said to me: Son of man, all the words, which I have spoken to thee, take into thy heart, and with thy ears hear: 11. and go, enter into captivity to the sons of thy people, and speak to them, and say to them: Thus saith the Lord God: if perhaps they may hear, if perhaps they may concede. 12. And the spirit took me up, and I heard behind me the voice of a great commotion, saying: Blessed be the glory of the Lord from His place. 13. And I saw ^B the voice of the wings of the animals flying one to another, and the voice of the wheels before them, and the voice of a great commotion. 14. And the spirit lifted me up, and took me, and I went, high in the air in the impetuosity of my spirit, and the hand of the Lord was upon me, powerful. 15. And I entered into the captivity in the high air, and I went around those who dwelt upon the river Chobar, those who were there: and I sat there seven days, dwelling in the midst of them. 16. And it came to pass after these seven days, and it came to pass is the word of the Lord to me, saying: 17. Son of man, I have given thee a watchman to the house of Israel, and thou shalt hear the word from My mouth, and thou shalt warn them from Me, 18. when I say to the wicked: Thou shalt die by death: and thou hast not warned him, nor hast thou spoken to warn the wicked, that he may turn from his ways, that he may live: that wicked one shall die in his injustice, and his blood I will require from thy hand. 19. And thou, if thou hast warned the wicked, and he has not been turned from his iniquity and from his way, that wicked one shall die in his injustice, and thou shalt deliver thy soul. 20. And when the just shall turn from his justices, and shall work wickedness, and I shall give torments before his face: he shall die, because thou hast not warned him: and he shall die in his sins, because his justices, which he did, shall not be commemorated for him, and his blood I will require from thy hand. 21. But thou, if thou hast warned the just, that he may not sin, and he has not sinned, the just shall live by life, because thou hast warned him, and thou shalt deliver thy soul. 22. And it came to pass upon me llbracketC the hand of the Lord, and He said to me: Arise, and go out into the field, and there the discourse shall be to thee. 23. And I arose, and went out into the field: and behold, there the glory of the Lord was standing, as the appearance, and as the glory, which I saw upon the river Chobar. And I fell upon my face, 24. and the spirit entered into me, and set me upon my feet, and spoke to me, and said to me: Go, and include thyself in the midst of thy house. 25. And thou, son of man, behold, chains are given upon thee, and they shall bind thee with them, and thou shalt not go out from the midst of them. 26. And I will tie thy tongue together to thy throat, and thou shalt be dumb, and thou shalt not be to them a man arguing; for it is a rebellious house. 27. And when I shall have spoken to thee, I will open thy mouth, and thou shalt say to them: Thus saith Adonai the Lord: He who hears, let him hear, and he who is rebellious, let him rebel; for it is a rebellious house.

Cap. IV. — 1. And thou, son of man, take to thee a la-

- ^Ater, and set it before thy face, and describe upon it the city of Jerusalem: 2. and thou shalt give against it an encircling, and thou shalt build against it fortifications, and thou shalt throw up a mound against it, and thou shalt give against it camps, and thou shalt arrange stations and battering-rams around it. 3. And thou, take unto thee a pan of iron, and set it as a wall of iron between thee and the city, and thou shalt set thy face toward it, and it shall be in a state of siege, and thou shalt besiege it: this is a sign to the house of Israel. 4. And thou shalt lie upon thy left side, and shalt place the iniquities of the house of Israel upon it, according to the number of the days, one hundred and ninety, which thou shalt lie upon it, and thou shalt take upon thee their iniquities. 5. And I have given to thee two of their iniquities in the number of the days, one hundred days, and thou shalt take upon thee the iniquities of the house of Israel. 6. And thou shalt finish these all, and shalt lie upon thy right side a second time, and shalt take upon thee the iniquities of the house of Judah for forty days: a day for a year I have given to thee. 7. And toward the siege of Jerusalem thou shalt set thy face, and thou shalt strengthen thy arm, and thou shalt prophesy against it. 8. And behold, I have given upon thee bonds, and thou shalt not turn thyself from thy one side to thy other side, until the days of thy siege are completed. 9. And thou, take unto thee wheat, and barley, and beans, and lentils, and millet, and spelt, and thou shalt put them in one vessel of clay; and thou shalt make them into bread for thyself, and according to the number of the days which thou sleepest upon thy side, one hundred and ninety days shalt thou eat it. 10. And thy food, which thou shalt eat, shall be by weight of twenty shekels a day; from time to time thou shalt eat it. 11. And thou shalt drink water by measure, the sixth part of a hin; from time to time thou shalt drink. 12. And thou shalt eat cake of barley; in the filth of human dung thou shalt hide it before their eyes. 13. And thou shalt say: Thus saith the Lord God of Israel: Even so shall the children of Israel eat their bread ^B unclean among the nations, whither I shall disperse them. 14. And I said: By no means, Lord God of Israel: for my soul has not been defiled in uncleanness, and I have not eaten of that which dieth of itself, nor that which is caught by wild beasts, from my youth until now, nor has unclean flesh entered into my mouth. 15. And He said to me: Behold I have given to thee cow's dung for human dung, and thou shalt make thy bread upon it. 16. And He said to me: Son of man, behold I am breaking the support of bread in Jerusalem, and they shall eat bread even by weight and in penury: and they shall drink water by measure and in despair, 17. so that they may be in need of it, and they shall pine away in their iniquities.

Cap. V.

^A in the sight of every wayfarer. 15. And thou shalt be lamented, and manifest in discipline, and a destruction among the nations that are round about thee, when I shall have executed judgments upon thee in My wrath, and in My fury, and in the retaliation of fury: I the Lord have spoken. 16. When I shall send upon them the evil arrows of famine, and they shall lead to consumption, which I will send them to destroy you: and I will gather the famine upon you, and will break your staff of bread. 17. And I will send upon thee famine, and evil beasts, and I will set them upon thy head; and death and blood shall pass through thee, and I will bring the sword upon thee round about: I the Lord have spoken.

13. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when your slain shall be among your idols round about your altars ^B upon every high hill, and upon all the tops of the mountains, and under every shady tree, and under every thick oak, the place where they have given there a sweet odor to all their idols. 14. And I will stretch out My hand upon them, and I will make the land desolate, and a destruction from the wilderness of Deblatha in all their dwelling-places, and you shall know that I am the Lord.

Cap. VII. 1. And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying: 2. And thou, son of man, thus saith the Lord Adonai to the land of Israel: The end is come, the end is come upon the four quarters of the land. 7. The end is come; upon thee, that dwellest upon the land: the time has come, the day has drawn near, not with precipitation, and not with sorrows. 8. Now from near I will pour out My wrath upon thee, and I will fulfill My fury in thee, and I will judge thee in thy ways, and I will lay upon thee all thine abominations. 9. Mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity; because I will lay thy ways upon thee, and thine abominations shall be in the midst of thee, and you shall know that I am the Lord ^C that smiteth. 3. Now the end is up- [this repeats in Latin, but for continuity we proceed] ...and I will avenge thee in thy ways, and I will lay upon thee all thine abominations. 4. Mine eye shall not spare thee, neither will I have pity; because I will lay thy ways upon thee, and thine abominations shall be in the midst of thee, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 5. For thus saith the Lord God: One evil, behold, is near. Cometh the complex; 10. behold the day, it is born; behold the end is come; the complex has gone forth, and the rod has flourished, pride has budded, 11. insolence has awakened into the staff of wickedness, and not with disquietude, nor with haste, and there is neither being of them, nor beauty in them. 12. The time is come, the day is at hand: he that buyeth, let him not rejoice, and he that selleth, let him not mourn: for wrath is upon all the multitude thereof. 13. For the buyer to the seller shall no more return; and no more in life is their life; for the vision unto all the multitude thereof shall not return; and man in the eye of his life shall not prevail. 14. Blow the trumpet, and judge all things, and there is none going to the battle; for My wrath is upon all the multitude thereof. 15. The battle is in the sword without, and famine and death within: he who is in the field, by the sword ^D

shall be brought to an end, but they who are in the city, famine and death shall consume. 16. And they shall be saved; those who shall have escaped from them, and they shall be upon the mountains, like doves betrothed: I will slay all, each one in his iniquities. 17. All hands shall be dissolved, and all thighs shall be polluted with moisture, and upon every face shall be shame upon them, and upon every head baldness. 19. Their silver shall be cast into the streets, and their gold shall be despised: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the Lord: their souls shall not be satisfied, and their bellies shall not be filled; because the torture of their iniquities has been. 20. They set them in pride, and the images of their abominations, their stumbling-blocks, they made out of them: therefore I gave them to them in uncleanness. 21. And I will deliver them into the hands of strangers to spoil them, and to the spoilers of the earth for a prey, and they shall pollute them. 22. And I will turn My face from them, and they shall pollute My visitation, and they shall enter into it not providing, and shall contaminate it. 23. And they shall make confusion; because the earth is full of the judgment of blood, and the city full of iniquity. 24. And I will bring the wicked of the nations, and they shall inherit their houses: and I will turn away the boasting of their strength, and their Holy Things shall be polluted. 25. Calamity upon calamity shall be, and rumor upon rumor shall be, and a vision shall be sought from the prophet, and the law shall perish from the priest, and counsel from the ancients. 27. The king shall mourn, and the prince shall be clothed with destruction, and the hands of the people of the land shall be relaxed: according to their ways I will do to them, and in their judgments I will take vengeance on them, and they shall know that I am the Lord.

^A Cap. VIII. — 1. And it came to pass in the sixth year, in the fifth month; on the fifth of the month, I was sitting in my house, and the elders of Judah were sitting before me: and the hand of the Lord Adonai came upon me there. 2. And I looked, and behold a likeness, as the appearance of a man: from his loins and even downward, fire, and from his loins and upward, as the appearance of a gentle breeze, as the appearance of electrum. 3. And he stretched out the likeness of a hand, and took me by the wind between the earth and the heaven, and brought me to Jerusalem in the vision of God to the porch of the inner gate, that looks toward the north, where was the statue of the image of jealousy, which possesseth. 4. And behold there was the glory of the Lord God of Israel, according to the ^B vision which I saw in the field. 5. And He said to me: Son of man, open, look with your eyes toward the north: and I opened, and I looked with my eyes toward the north, and behold, from the north at the gate, which looks toward the east, the image of this jealousy, as it enters. 6. And He said to me: Son of man, have you seen what these are doing? the great iniquities which the house of Israel is doing here, that they might remove themselves from My Holy Things, and you shall yet see greater iniquities. 7. And He brought me to the vestibule of the court, and I saw, and behold a hole in the wall. 8. And He said to me: Son of man, bore now in the wall: and I dug in the wall, and behold one door. 9. And He said to me: Enter, and see the wicked iniquities ^C which they are doing here today. 10. And I entered, and saw, and behold every likeness of reptile and beast, and vain abominations, and all the idols of the house of Israel described upon the wall round about. 11. And seventy men of the elders of the house of Israel, and Jezoniah the son of Shaphan was standing in the midst of them, and they were standing before their face: and each one, his censer was in his hand, and the vapor of the cloud of incense was ascending. 12. And He said to me: Have you seen, son of man, what the elders of the house of Israel are doing here, in the dark: each one of them in his hidden chamber; because they said: The Lord does not see us, the Lord has forsaken the land. 13. And He said to me: Yet again, turned, you shall see greater iniquities ^D which these are doing. 14. And He brought me to the vestibule of the gate of the house of the Lord, which looks to the north: and behold there women sitting, mourning for Thammuz. 15. And He said to me: Have you seen, son of man, and yet when you shall have turned, you shall see greater devices than these. 16. And He brought me into the inner court of the house of the Lord: and above the vestibule of the temple of the Lord between the Elam and between the altar, about twenty-five men, their backs toward the temple of the Lord, and their faces against; and they were adoring toward the east; the sun. 17. And He said to me: Have you seen, son of man: is it a small thing to the house of Judah, that they should do the iniquities, which they have done here? because they have filled the earth with iniquities, and have turned to provoke Me: and behold they are extending the branch as if mocking. 18. And I will do to them with fury: My eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: and they shall call in My ears with a loud voice, and I will not hear them.

Cap. IX. — 1. And He cried in my ears with a loud voice saying: The vengeance of the city has approached: and each one had his vessels of destruction in his hand. 2. And behold six men were coming by the way of the high gate, which looks to the north, and each one his weapon of slaughter in his hand: and one man in the midst of them,

clothed in a linen garment, and a tablet of a writer was upon his loins: and they entered, and stood beside [+] the altar of brass. 3. And the glory of the God of Israel descended from the Cherubim, which was above them, to the threshold of the house: and he called to the man clothed in the linen garment, who had the tablet upon his loins. 4. And the Lord said to him: Pass through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and give a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh, and that lament for all the iniquities that are done in the midst of them. 5. And to them he said, while I heard: Go into the city after him, and strike: let not your eye spare, neither have pity. 6. The old man, and the infant, and the virgin, and the little ones, and women, kill ye into destruction: but upon all upon whom is the mark, approach not; and begin at my sanctuaries. And they began with the ancient men who were within the house. 7. And he said to them: Defile the house, and fill the ways with the dead that go out, and strike and smite the city. 8. And it came to pass, when they were striking, [*] I was left alone; and I fell upon my face, and cried out, and said: Woe to me, Adonai Lord, hast thou destroyed the remnants of Israel, by pouring out thy fury upon Jerusalem? 9. And he said to me: The injustice of the house of Israel and Judah is magnified exceedingly; for the earth is filled with blood, and the city is filled with injustice and uncleanness, for they said: The Lord hath forsaken the earth, and the Lord seeth not. 10. [+] And I am from above; my eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: their ways have I given upon their own heads. 11. And behold the man who was clothed [(n)] in the linen garment, and girt his loins with a girdle, and answered [*] the word, saying: I have done as thou commandedst me.

Chapter X

1. And I saw, and behold upon the firmament, which was above the head of the Cherubim, as it were a sapphire stone, [*] as the vision of the likeness of a throne [*] appeared; above them. 2. And he said to the man clothed with the stole [*], and said: Enter in the midst of the wheels, and under the Cherubim, and fill thy hands with coals of fire from the midst of the Cherubim, and scatter them over the city: and he entered before me. 3. And the Cherubim stood at the right side of the house, when the man entered: and a cloud filled the inner court. 4. And the glory of the Lord was lifted up from the Cherubim to the threshold of the house, and the cloud filled the house and the court was filled with the brightness of the glory of the Lord. 5. And the voice of the wings of the Cherubim was heard even to the outer court, as the voice of God Shaddai speaking. 6. And it came to pass, when he commanded the man clothed with the sacred stole, saying, Take fire from the midst of the wheels, from the midst of the Cherubim; and he entered, and stood beside the wheels. 7. And the Cherub stretched forth his hand [*] from the midst of the Cherubim; into the midst of the fire existing in the midst of the Cherubim, and took, and gave into the hands of him clothed with the sacred stole: and he took, and went out. 9. And I saw, and behold four wheels stood beside the Cherubim: one wheel beside one Cherub, and one wheel beside one Cherub: and the appearance of the wheels was as the appearance of a carbuncle stone. 10. And their appearance was one likeness to all four, as it were a wheel in the midst of a wheel. 11. When they went, they went into their four parts, they did not turn back, when they went: because to the place where one principle looked, they went following it, and did not turn back when they went. 12. [*] And all their body, and their backs, and their hands, and their wings, and the wheels were full of eyes round about in their four wheels. 13. And as for these wheels, it was called Gelgel, in my hearing. 14. [*] And four faces to one: the face of the first was the face of a Cherub, and the face of the second was the face of a man, and the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle. 15. And the Cherubim lifted up themselves, the same animal which I saw over the river Chobar. 16. And when the Cherubim went, the wheels went, and these near to them: and when the Cherubim lifted up their wings, so that they might lift themselves from the earth, the wheels did not turn back from them, [*] even they themselves from them, which were at their side. 17. When they stood, they stood, and when they lifted themselves up, they lifted themselves up with them; because the spirit of life was in them. 18. And the glory of the Lord went out from the threshold of the house, and ascended over the Cherubim. 19. And the Cherubim lifted up their wings, and lifted themselves up from the earth before me, while they went out, and the wheels also at their side: and they stood before the vestibule of the gate of the house of the Lord, which is toward the front, and the glory of the God of Israel was upon them from above. 20. This is the animal, which I had seen under the God of Israel over the river Chobar, and I knew that it was a Cherub. 21. Four faces to one, and four wings to one, and the likeness of the hands of a man under their wings. 22. And the likeness of their faces: these are the faces which I saw [*] under the glory of the God of Israel; over the river Chobar their appearance: and these went each one according to the direction of its face.

Chapter XI

1. And the spirit took me and brought me upon the gate of the house of the Lord, which is toward the front of me, looking toward the east: and behold before the vestibule of the gate about twenty-five men, and I saw in the midst of them Jazaniah the son of Azur, and Phaltiah the son of Banaiah, who are in the principality of the people. 2. And the Lord said to me: Son of man, these are the men, who think vain things, and counsel evil counsel in this city, 3. who say: Were not houses recently built? This is the pot, and we are the flesh. 4. Therefore prophesy against them, prophesy, O son of man. 4. And the spirit of the Lord fell upon me, and said to me: Say: Thus saith the Lord: So you have said, O house of Israel, and I know the thoughts of your spirit. 6. You have multiplied [(x)] your dead in this city, and you have filled its ways with the slain. 7. Therefore

thus says Adonai the Lord: Your dead, whom you have slain in its midst, these are the meat, and this is the pot; but I will lead you out of its midst. 8. You fear the sword, and I will bring the sword upon you, says the Lord God. 9. And I will lead you out of its midst, and I will deliver you into the hands of strangers, and I will execute judgments among you: 10. you shall fall by the sword; I will judge you on the borders of Israel, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 11. This shall not be a pot for you, and you shall not be meat in its midst; I will judge you on the borders of Israel. 12. And you shall know that I am the Lord; because you have not walked in my statutes, and have not practiced my judgments, but have practiced according to the judgments of the nations that are around you. 13. And it came to pass, while I was prophesying, that Phaltiah the son of Benaiah died: and I fell upon my face, and I cried with a loud voice and said: Woe to me, woe to me, O Adonai Lord, are you bringing the remnant of Israel to a full end? 14. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 15. Son of man, your brothers, your brothers, and the men of your captivity, and all the house of Israel, all of them are they to whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said: Stand far off from the Lord; the land is given to us for an inheritance. 16. Therefore say: Thus says Adonai the Lord: Because I have driven them far off among the nations, and because I have scattered them among the countries, and I have effectively become a small sanctuary for them in the countries whither they have entered. 17. Therefore say: Thus says Adonai the Lord: And I will receive you from among the nations, and I will gather you from the countries where I have scattered you, and I will give you the land of Israel: 18. and they shall enter there, and they shall take away all its abominations, and all its iniquities from it. 19. And I will give them another heart, and I will put a new spirit within them; and I will take away the stony heart out of their flesh, and I will give them a heart of flesh, 20. that they may walk in my statutes, and keep my ordinances, and do them; and they shall be my people, and I will be their God, ^B says the Lord. 21. And according to the heart of their abominations and their iniquities, as their heart went, I have brought their ways upon their heads, says Adonai the Lord. 22. And the Cherubim lifted up their wings, and the wheels beside them, and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above. 23. And the glory of the Lord went up from the midst of the city, and stood upon the mountain, which was on the east side of the city. 24. And the spirit lifted me up, and brought me in a vision by the spirit of God into the land of the Chaldeans to those in captivity. And the vision which I had seen went up from me. 25. And I spoke to the captivity all the words of the Lord, which he had revealed to me.

Chapter XII

^A so that the land may be desolate with its fullness, because of the impiety of all who dwell in it. 20. And the cities that are inhabited shall be laid waste, and the land shall be in ruin, and you shall know that I am the Lord.

21. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 22. Son of man, what is this proverb for you in the land of Israel, the people saying: The days are prolonged, and every vision has perished? 23. Therefore say to them: Thus says Adonai the Lord: I will turn away this proverb, and they shall no longer use this proverb in the house of Israel; for you shall speak to them, saying: The days have drawn near, and the word of every vision. 24. For there shall be no more any false vision, ^B or a divining prediction in the midst of the children of Israel. 25. For I the Lord will speak, and I will speak the words that I say, and I will perform them, and I will no longer delay; for in your days, O rebellious house of Israel, I will speak the word, and I will perform it, says Adonai the Lord. 26. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 27. Son of man, behold the house of Israel, those who are rebellious, saying: The vision that he sees is for many days, and he prophesies for long times. 28. Therefore say to them: Thus says Adonai the Lord: None of my words shall be delayed any longer, whatever I shall have spoken, I will speak the word ^C and I will perform it, says Adonai the Lord.

Cap. XIII, 1. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 2. Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel who prophesy, and you shall say to the prophets who prophesy from their own heart, and you shall prophesy, and say to them: Hear the word of the Lord. 3. Thus says Adonai the Lord: Woe to those who prophesy from their own heart, walking after their own spirit, and who see nothing at all. 4. Like foxes in the desert were your prophets, O Israel. 5. You did not stand for stability, and you did not gather the flock for the house of Israel ^D to stand in the battle in the day of the Lord. 6. They see lying things and divine vanities, who say: The Lord says; yet the Lord did not send them, and they have begun to stir up the word. 7. Have you not seen a false vision and spoken vain divinations? And you say: The Lord says; whereas I have not spoken. 8. Therefore say: Thus says Adonai the Lord: Because your words are lies, and your divinations are vain, therefore behold, I am against you, says Adonai the Lord, because they see lies and those who speak vain things. 9. They shall not be in the instruction of my people, and they shall not be written in the register of the house of Israel, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel, and they shall know that I am Adonai the Lord. 10. Because they have deceived my people, saying: Peace, and there was no peace; and this man builds a wall, and they plaster it without reason. 11. Say to those who plaster without reason: It shall fall, and there shall be an overflowing rain, and I will give great stones into their joints, and they shall fall, and a wind taking it away, and it shall be broken asunder. 12. And behold, the wall has fallen; and will it not be said to you: Where is the plaster which you plastered? 13. Therefore thus says Adonai the Lord: I will even cause an exhausting wind to break forth with my fury, and there shall be an overflowing rain in my anger, and great stones will I bring in fury to a finished work: 14. and I will throw down the wall that you plastered, that it may fall: and I will set it upon the ground, and its foundations shall be uncovered, and it shall fall, and you shall be consumed with rebukes, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 15. And I will fulfill my fury upon the wall, and upon those who plaster it, and it shall fall. And I said to you: There is no wall, nor those who plaster it. 16. The prophets of Israel, who prophesy over Jerusalem, and who see for her peace, and there is no peace, says Adonai the Lord. 17. And you, son of man, set your face against the daughters of your people, who prophesy from their own heart, and prophesy against them, 18. and you shall say: Thus says Adonai the Lord: Woe to those who sew cushions under every arm of the hand, and make veils over every head of every stature, to deceive souls: the souls of my people have been deceived, and they were saving souls. 19. And they were profaning me to my people for a handful of barley, and for crumbs of bread, to kill the souls that ought not to die, and to save the souls that ought not to live, while you speak to my people who hear hollow, vain words. 20. Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against your cushions, upon which you deceive souls there: and I will tear them from your arms, and I will let go the souls, which you overturn, the souls of them in dispersion: 21. and I will tear your veils, and I will deliver my people out of your hand, and they shall no longer be in your hands to be entrapped: and you shall know that I am the Lord. 22. Because you were distressing the heart of the righteous unjustly, when I did not distress him, and to strengthen the hands of the wicked, that he should not turn from his evil way, and live; 23. therefore you shall not see lies, and you shall not divine divinations anymore: and I will deliver my people out of your hand, and you shall know that I am the Lord.

Cap. XIV, 1. And there came to me men from the elders of Israel, and they sat before my face. 2. And their daughters, or their daughters shall serve...

but if they themselves are saved, but the earth shall be in ruin. 17. Or if I bring a sword upon that land, and I say: Let the sword pass through the land, and I shall take away from it man and beast. 18. And these three ^A men were within it, as I live, says Adonai the Lord, they shall not deliver sons or daughters, but they themselves alone shall be saved. 19. Or if I also send death upon that land, and I pour out my fury upon it in blood, to destroy from it man and beast, 20. and Noah, and Daniel, and Job were in the midst of it, as I live, says Adonai the Lord, if sons or daughters are left behind, they themselves in their justice shall deliver their souls. 21. Thus says Adonai the Lord: But if I also send my four bitter vengeances, the sword, and famine, and evil beasts, and death upon Jerusalem, to destroy from it man and beast. 22. And behold, those who remain in it, who are saved from it, they themselves shall bring out sons and daughters, behold they themselves shall go out to you, and you shall see their ways, and their thoughts, and you shall repent over the evils that I have brought upon Jerusalem, upon all the evils that I have brought upon it. 23. And they shall console you, because you shall see their ways, and their thoughts, and you shall know that I have not done in vain all that I have done in it, says Adonai the Lord. ^B

Cap. XV, 1. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 2. And you, son of man, what does the wood of the vine make more than any branches of wood which are among the trees of the forest? 3. Shall wood be taken from it to make into work? Shall a peg be taken from it to hang any vessel upon it? 4. Beyond that it is given to the fire for consumption: its cleaning, which in every year the fire consumes, and it fails in the end: will it be useful for work? 5. Nor while it is still whole, will it be for work? How much more if the fire has also consumed it to the end, will it still be for work? 6. Therefore say: Thus says Adonai the Lord: As the wood of the vine is among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for consumption, so have I given the inhabitants in Jerusalem. 7. And I will set my face against them: they ^C shall go out from the fire, and the fire shall devour them, and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I have set my face against them. Because they have committed a transgression, says Adonai the Lord.

Cap. XVI, 1. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 2. Son of man, testify to Jerusalem of her iniquities, 3. and you shall say: Thus says Adonai the Lord to Jerusalem: Thy root, and thy generation is from the land of Canaan: thy father was an Amorite, and thy mother a Hittite. 4. And thy generation in the day ^D that thou wast born, thou didst not bind thy breasts, and in water thou wast naked and uncovered, and while thou wast born...

thou wert not cleansed for well-being, nor salted with salt, nor wrapped in swaddling clothes. 5. Neither did my eye spare thee, to do for thee one of all these things, in pitying thee; but thou wast cast out upon the face of the field, because of the perversity of thy soul, in the day that thou wast born. 6. And I passed by thee, and saw thee ^A polluted in thy blood, and I said to thee: In thy blood, live; live. 7. Multiply: as the plant of the field I gave thee, and thou art multiplied, and art grown great, and art entered into cities of cities: thy breasts are fashioned, and thy hair is grown, yet thou wert naked and uncovered. 8. And I passed by thee, and I saw thee, and behold thy time, and the time of turning: and I spread my wings over thee, and covered thy shame, and I swore to thee: and I entered into a covenant with thee, saith Adonai the Lord: and thou didst become mine. 9. And I washed thee in water, and I cleansed thy blood from thee, and I anointed thee with oil. 10. And I clothed thee with embroidered ^B work, and I shod thee with hyacinth, and I girded thee about with fine linen, and I clothed thee with fine silk. 11. And I adorned thee with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain about thy neck. 12. And I put a jewel upon thy nose, and rings upon thy ears, and a crown of glory upon thy head. 13. And thou wert adorned with gold and silver, and thy garments were of fine linen, and fine silk, and embroidered work: fine flour, and honey, and oil thou didst eat, and thou didst become beautiful, very, very beautiful; and thou didst go forward into the kingdom: 14. and thy name went forth among the nations for thy beauty, because it was complete in the beauty of comeliness, which I placed upon thee, saith Adonai ^C the Lord. 15. But thou didst trust in thy beauty, and thou didst play the harlot because of thy name, and thou didst pour out thy fornication on every traveller: thou wert his. 16. And thou didst take of thy garments, and didst make for thyself embroidered high places, and didst play the harlot upon them, and this thou shalt not do, neither shall it be. 17. And thou didst take the vessels of thy glory of my silver, and of my gold, of those things which I gave thee, and didst make for thyself male images, and didst play the harlot with them, 18. and didst take thy embroidered garment, and covered them, and my oil and my perfumes thou didst place before their face: 19. and my bread which I gave thee, fine flour and oil and honey, I fed thee with, and thou didst place them before their face for a sweet savour. And it came to pass after these things, saith Adonai the Lord, 20. that thou didst take thy sons and thy daughters, whom thou didst bear to me, and didst sacrifice them to them to be consumed: as if it were a small matter ^D that thou didst play the harlot, 21. and didst slay my children, and didst give them up, when thou didst separate them from them. 22. This is more than all thy fornication, and thine abominations: and thou hast not remembered the day of thy youth, when thou wast naked and uncovered, and while thou wast polluted in thy blood, thou didst live. 23. And it happened, after all thy iniquities, woe, woe unto thee, saith Adonai the Lord, 24. and thou didst build thyself a house of whoredom, and didst make thyself a habitation in every street, 25. and upon the top of every way thou didst build thy brothel, and didst corrupt thy beauty: and thou didst spread open thy legs to every passenger, and didst multiply thy whoredom, 26. and thou didst play the harlot with the sons of Egypt, thy neighbours, of great flesh, and much didst thou play the harlot to provoke me. 27. But if I stretch out my hand over thee, and take away thy legal rights, and deliver thee into the souls of them that hate thee, the daughters of the aliens, who make thee turn from thy way, thou hast acted impiously. 28. And thou didst play the harlot with the sons of Assur, and thou wert not satisfied, and thou didst play the harlot, and wert not satisfied, 29. and thou didst multiply thy whoredoms unto the land of Canaan, and of the Chaldeans, and not even in these wert thou filled. 30. What shall I do with thy heart, saith Adonai the Lord? when thou doest all these works of a whorish woman, acting with confidence: thou hast played the harlot three times upon thy daughters: 31. when thou didst build thy brothel upon the top of every way, and didst make thy habitation in every street, and didst not become like a harlot gathering rewards, 32. a woman committing adultery under her husband with strangers, like to thee, who receiveth rewards from her husband, 33. and to all that play the harlot with her, thou addest and givest rewards: and thou didst give rewards to all thy lovers, and didst bribe them, that they might come to thee from round about in thy whoredom. 34. And there hath been perversity in thee more than in women, in thy whoredom, and after thee there have not been those who committed whoredom in that, that thou givest rewards, and rewards are not given to thee, and there have been perversities in thee. 35. Therefore, O harlot, hear the word of the Lord. 36. Thus saith Adonai the Lord: For that thou hast poured out thy brass, even thy shame of whoredom shall be revealed to thy lovers, and into all the thoughts of thy iniquities, and in the blood of thy children, whom thou didst give to them. And they shall burn thy houses with fire, and shall execute judgments upon thee in the sight of many women: and I will turn thee away from thy whoredom, and thou shalt give no more hire. 42. So will I make my fury toward thee to rest, and my jealousy shall depart from thee, and I will be quiet, and will be no more angry. 43. Because thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, and hast fretted me in all these things; behold, therefore I also have recompensed thy ways upon thy head, saith the Adonai the Lord: and thou hast not committed lewdness above all thine abominations. 44. Behold, every one that useth proverbs shall use this proverb against thee, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter. 45. Thou art thy mother's daughter, that loathed her husband and her children; and thou art the sister of thy sisters, which loathed their husbands and their children: your mother was an Hittite, and your father an Amorite. 46. And thine elder sister is Samaria, she and her daughters that dwell at thy left hand: and thy younger sister, that dwelleth at thy right hand, is Sodom and her daughters. 47. Yet hast thou not walked after their ways, nor done after their abominations: but as if that were a very little thing, thou wast corrupted more than they in all thy ways. 48. As I live, saith the Adonai the Lord, Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters. 49. Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. 50. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good. 51. Neither hath Samaria committed half of thy sins; but thou hast multiplied thine abominations more than they, and hast justified thy sisters in all thine abominations which thou hast done. 52. Thou also, bear thine own shame, in that thou hast judged thy sisters in thy sins that thou hast committed more abominable than they: they are more righteous than thou: yea, be thou confounded also, and bear thy shame, in that thou hast justified thy sisters. 53. When I shall bring again their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, ^B then will I bring again the captivity of thy captives in the midst of them: 54. That thou mayest bear thine own shame, and mayest be confounded in all that thou hast done, in that thou art a comfort unto them. 55. When thy sister Sodom and her

daughters shall return to their former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former estate, then thou and thy daughters shall return to your former estate. 56. For thy sister Sodom was not mentioned by thy mouth in the day of thy pride, 57. before thy wickedness was discovered, as at the time of thy reproach of the daughters of Syria and all that are round about her; the daughters of the Philistines, which despise thee round about. 58. Thou hast borne thy lewdness and thine abominations, saith the Lord. 59. For thus saith the Lord God: I will even deal with thee as thou hast done, which hast despised the oath in breaking the covenant. 60. Nevertheless I will remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth, and I will establish unto thee an everlasting covenant. 61. Then thou shalt remember thy ways and be ashamed, when thou shalt receive thy sisters, thine elder and thy younger: and I will give them unto thee for daughters, but not by thy covenant. 62. And I will establish my covenant with thee; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord: 63. that thou mayest remember, and be confounded, and never open thy mouth any more because of thy shame, when I am pacified toward thee for all that thou hast done, saith the Lord God.

THE PROPHET EZEKIEL, CHAPTER XVII.

1. And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, 2. Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable unto the house of Israel; 3. and say, Thus saith the Lord God; A great eagle with great wings, long winged, full of feathers, which had divers colours, came unto Lebanon, and took the highest branch of the cedar: 4. he cropped off the top of his young twigs, and carried it into a land of traffick; he set it in a city of merchants. 5. He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful field; he placed it by great waters, and set it as a willow tree. 6. And it grew, and became a spreading vine of low stature, whose branches turned toward him, and the roots thereof were under him: so it became a vine, and brought forth branches, and shot forth sprigs. 7. There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers: and, behold, this vine did bend her roots toward him, and shot forth her branches toward him, that he might water it by the furrows of her plantation. 8. It was planted in a good soil by great waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine. 9. Say thou, Thus saith the Lord God; Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up the roots thereof, and cut off the fruit thereof, that it wither? it shall wither in all the leaves of her spring, even without great power or many people to pluck it up by the roots thereof. 10. Yea, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind toucheth it? it shall wither in the furrows where it grew. 11. Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, 12. Say now to the rebellious house, Know ye not what these things mean? tell them, Behold, the king of Babylon is come to Jerusalem, and hath taken the king thereof, and the princes thereof, and led them with him to Babylon; 13. and hath taken of the king's seed, and hath made a covenant with him, and hath taken an oath of him: he hath also taken the mighty of the land: 14. ^A that the kingdom might be base, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping of his covenant it might stand. 15. But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and much people. Shall he prosper? shall he escape that doeth such things? or shall he break the covenant, and be delivered? 16. As I live, saith the Lord God, surely in the place where the king dwelleth that made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he brake, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die. 17. Neither shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company make for him in the war, by casting up mounts, and building forts, to cut off many persons: 18. seeing he despised the oath by breaking the covenant, when, lo, he ^B had given his hand, and hath done all these things, he shall not escape. 19. Therefore thus saith the Lord God; As I live, surely mine oath that he hath despised, and my covenant that he hath broken, even it will I recompense upon his own head. 20. And I will spread my net upon him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, and will plead with him there for his trespass that he hath trespassed against me. 21. ^C And all his fugitives with all his bands shall fall by the sword, and they that remain shall be scattered toward all winds: and ye shall know that I the Lord have spoken it. 22. Thus saith the Lord God; I will also take of the highest branch of the high cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the top of his young twigs a tender one, and will plant it upon an high mountain and eminent: 23. in the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it: and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly cedar: and under it shall dwell all fowl of every wing; in the shadow of the branches thereof shall they dwell. 24. And all the trees of the field shall know that I the Lord have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish: I the Lord have spoken and have done it.

CHAPTER XVIII.

1. The word of the Lord came unto me again, saying, 2. What mean ye, that ye use this proverb ^D concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge? 3. As I live, saith the Lord God, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel. 4. Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. 5. But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right, 6. and hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour's wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman, 7. and hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment; 8. he that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man, 9. hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord God. 10. If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things, 11. and that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour's wife, 12. hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination, 13. hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him. 14. Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father's sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like, 15. that hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour's wife, 16. neither hath oppressed any, hath not withholden the pledge, neither hath spoiled by violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment, 17. that hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live. 18. As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity. 19. Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live. 20. The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. 21. But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed,

and shall keep all my precepts, and shall do judgment and justice, he shall live, he shall not die. 22. All his sins, which he hath committed, shall not be remembered against him: in his justice which he hath done, he shall live. 23. Do I want the death of the wicked, ^A saith the Lord God, as much as that he should turn from his bad way and live? 24. But if the just man shall turn away from his justice, and shall do iniquity, according to all the iniquities which the wicked man hath done, if he shall do it, shall he live? All his justices, which he hath done, shall not be remembered against him: in his delinquency, in which he hath fallen, and in his sins, which he hath sinned, in them he shall die. 25. And you have said: The way of the Lord is not right. But hear, O house of Israel: is not my way right? Is your way not right? 26. When a just man shall turn himself away from his justice, and shall do a delinquency, and shall die in that delinquency which he hath done, in it he shall die. 27. And when a wicked man shall turn himself away from his iniquity which he hath done, and shall do judgment and justice, he hath saved his soul. 28. Because he hath beheld, and hath turned himself away from all his impieties which he had done, he shall live, he shall not die. 29. And the house of Israel say, The way of the Lord is not right. Is my way not right, O house of Israel? Is your way not right? 30. Therefore, I will judge you every man according to his own way, O house of Israel, saith the Lord Adonai. Convert yourselves, and turn away from all your impieties, and ^B they shall not be unto you an iniquity for torment. 31. Cast away from you all your impieties, which you have impiously acted against me, and make to yourselves a new heart, and a new spirit, and do all my precepts: and why will you die, O house of Israel? saith the Lord. 32. Because I will not the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord Adonai: and convert yourselves, and live.

Chapter XIX

1. And thou, son of man, take up a lamentation for the prince of Israel, 2. and say: Why did thy mother become a whelp in the midst of the lions? In the midst of the lions she multiplied her whelps, 3. and it learned to catch prey: it devoured men. 4. And the nations heard of it: it was caught in their corruption, and they led it in a muzzle into the land of Egypt. 5. And it saw that it had been forsaken by her, and its substance had perished, and it took another of ^C its whelps, it made him a lion. 6. And he walked in the midst of the lions: he was made a lion, and learned to catch prey: he devoured men; 7. and he grazed in his boldness, and he desolated their cities, and wasted the land, and the fullness thereof by the voice of his roaring. 8. And the nations set upon him from every side from the regions, and spread their nets over him: he was caught in their corruption. 9. And they put him in a muzzle, and in a cage: he came to the king of Babylon, and he brought him into prison, that his voice might not be heard upon the mountains of Israel. 10. Thy mother is like a vine, like a flower in a pomegranate tree, planted in water: her fruit and her germ were made from many waters. 11. And a rod of strength was made for her unto the tribe of them that govern, and it was exalted in its magnitude, in the midst of the shoots. And it saw its magnitude in the multitude of its branches: 12. and it was broken in fury, thrown upon the ground, and the wind of blight dried up its choice parts: they were vindicated, and its rods of strength withered: fire consumed it: 13. and now they have planted it in the desert, in a land without water. 14. And fire went out ^D from its choice rod, and devoured it, and there was no rod of strength in it: into a tribe, for a parable of lamentation it is, and shall be for a lamentation.

Chapter XX

1. And it came to pass in the seventh year, in the fifth month, the tenth of the month, that men from the elders of the house of Israel came to inquire of the Lord, and sat before my face. 2. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 3. Son of man, speak to the elders of the house of Israel, and say unto them: Thus saith the Lord Adonai: Are you come to inquire of me? As I live, if I shall answer you, saith the Lord Adonai, 4. if I shall have taken vengeance on them: son of man, bear witness to them of the iniquities of their fathers, 5. and say unto them: Thus saith the Lord GOD: From the day that I chose the house of Israel, and was made known unto the seed of the house of Jacob, and was made known to them in the land of Egypt, and took them with my hand, saying: I am the Lord your God: 6. in that day I took them with my hand, that I might lead them out from the land of Egypt into a land which I had prepared for them, a land flowing with milk and honey, which is the honeycomb more than all lands. 7. And I said unto them: Let each one cast away the abominations from his eyes, and be not defiled in the studies of Egypt: I am the Lord your God. 8. And they departed from me, and would not hear me: every one of them did not cast away the abominations from their eyes, and they did not leave the studies of Egypt. And I said that I would pour out my fury upon them, to fulfill my wrath in them in the midst of the land of Egypt. 9. And I acted, that my name might not be entirely profaned before the nations, in the midst of which they are, in which I was made known unto them before them, that I might lead them out from the land of Egypt. 10. And I led them out from the land of Egypt, and brought them into the land of the desert, 11. and I gave them my precepts, and made my justifications known to them, which if a man shall do, he shall live in them. 12. And I gave them my sabbaths, that they might be for a sign between me and between them, that they might know that I am the Lord, sanctifying them. 13. And I said to the house of Israel in the desert:

walk in my precepts, and observe my justifications, that you may do them, which if a man do, he shall live in them. And the house of Israel provoked me in the desert: they walked not in my precepts, and rejected my justifications, which if a man do, he shall live in them: and they profaned my sabbaths exceedingly. And I said: I will pour out my fury upon them in the desert, and I will consume them. 14. ^A And I did, that my name might not be completely profaned before the nations, out of whose sight I had brought them out. 15. And I lifted up my hand over them in the desert, that I would not bring them into the land which I gave them, a land flowing with milk and honey: (i) a honeycomb is more than all the earth. 16. Because they rejected my justifications, and walked not in my precepts in them, and profaned my sabbaths, (k) and walked after the thoughts of their hearts, but I spared them, and did not bring them to destruction in the desert. 18. And I said to their children in the desert: Walk not in the statutes of your fathers, and observe not their justifications, and be not defiled by their ^B practices: 19. I am the Lord your God: walk in my precepts, and observe my justifications, and do them. 20. And sanctify my sabbaths, and they shall be a sign between me and between you, that you may know that I am the Lord your God. 21. And they embittered me, and their children walked not in my precepts, and observed not my justifications, to do them which a man shall do, and shall live in them, and they profaned my sabbaths. And I said I would pour out my fury upon them, to fulfill my anger upon them in the desert. 22. And I turned my hand for them, and I did, that my name should not be profaned at all before the nations, out of whose sight I brought them out. 23. And ^C I lifted up my hand over them in the desert, to disperse them among the nations, and to scatter them in the regions, 24. because they did not my justifications, and rejected my precepts, and profaned my sabbaths, (m) and their eyes were after the thoughts of their fathers. 25. And I gave them precepts not good, and justifications in which they shall not live. 26. And I defiled them in their gifts, when I shall make pass every (n) opener of the womb, that (o) I should destroy them, that they might know that I am the Lord. 27. Therefore speak to the house of Israel, O son of man, and say to them: Thus saith Adonai the Lord: Even in this your fathers provoked me in their transgressions, in which they transgressed against me. 28. And I brought them into the land, upon which I lifted up my hand, ^D to give it to them. And they saw every high hill, and every shady tree, and sacrificed there to their gods, and set there the provocation of their gifts, and placed there their sweet odor, and poured out their libations. 29. And I said to them: What is (p) Abana, that you enter into it? And they called the name of it Abana, even to this day. 30. Therefore say to the house of Israel: Thus saith the Lord (r) the Lord: If you be defiled in the iniquities of your fathers, and commit adultery after their abominations, 31. and in the firstfruits of your gifts in your separations, when you make your children pass through the fire, you are defiled in all your thoughts even to this day: and shall I answer you, O house of Israel? I live, saith Adonai the Lord, if I will answer you, and if this spirit shall ascend upon your mind, 32. and it shall not be, as you say: We will be as the nations, and as the tribes of the earth, to worship wood and stones. 33. Therefore, I live, saith Adonai the Lord, if I shall not reign over you with a potent hand, and with a stretched-out arm, and with fury poured out, 34. and I will bring you out from the peoples, and I will gather you from the regions where you are dispersed, with a potent hand, and with a stretched-out arm, and with fury poured out. 35. And I will bring you into the desert of the peoples, and there I will plead with you in judgment face to face. 36. As I pleaded in judgment against your fathers in the desert, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, so will I judge you, saith the Lord (s) the Lord. 37. And I will make you pass under my rod, and I will bring you into the number of the testament, 38. and I will select from you the apostates and the impious; for I will bring them out from the land of their sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 39. And you, house of Israel, thus saith the Lord Lord: Every one (x) of you remove your practices, and after these if you will not hear me, and if you will not profane my holy name any more in your gifts, and in your practices; 40. because upon the mountain of my holiness; upon the high mountain of Israel, saith the Lord Lord, there shall worship the service of all the house of Israel until the end: and there I will receive you, and there I will seek your firstfruits, and the firstfruits of your separations in all your sanctifications. 41. In a sweet odor I will receive you, when I have brought you out from the nations, and have gathered you from the regions where you were dispersed, and I shall be sanctified in you before the eyes of the nations. 42. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I have brought you into the land of Israel, into the land, upon which I lifted up my hand, to give it to your fathers. 43. (y) And

all your doings, with which you have been defiled; and you shall look upon your own faces in all your evils which you have committed. 44. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I have done this for you, so that my name ^A be not profaned according to your evil ways, and according to your corrupt doings, O house of Israel, says Adonai the Lord. 45. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 46. Son of man, set your face ^A toward Theman, and look toward Darom, and prophesy against the forest of the South [Nageb]; 47. and you shall say to the forest of the South: Hear the word of the Lord: Thus says Adonai the Lord: Behold, I will kindle a fire in you, and it shall devour in you every green tree, and every dry tree: the flame that is kindled shall not be quenched, and every face from the east to the north shall be burned in it. 48. And all flesh shall know that I am the Lord, and have kindled it, and it shall not be quenched. 49. And I said: Alas, O Lord, Lord, they say to me: Is it not a parable that is spoken?

CAP. XXI.—1. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 2. And you, son of man, groan in the breaking of your loins, and you shall groan with grief before their eyes. 7. And it shall be, if they say to you: Why do you groan? that you shall say: For the report, because it comes, and every heart shall be struck, and all hands shall be dissolved, and the spirit of all flesh shall go out, and all loins shall be defiled with liquid: behold it comes, and it shall be, says Adonai the Lord. 8. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 9. Son of man, prophesy and say: Thus says Adonai the Lord: Say, O sword, ^C O sword, be sharpened, and rage with fury, 10. that you may make slaughter: be sharpened, that you may be polished, prepared for destruction: kill, despise, my son, repel every rod. 11. And he has given it prepared to be held in his hands: the sword is polished, it is prepared, that it may be given into the hand of the slayer. 12. Cry and howl, son of man; for this has been done to my people, this to all the princes of Israel: they shall dwell, for the sword was upon my people: therefore strike [your hand] upon your thigh; 13. because it is justified, and what if the rod also have been rejected? And you, son of man, prophesy, and strike one hand upon another, and double the sword: the third sword is the sword of the slain, the great sword of the killed: and you shall terrify them, 15. so that every heart may be struck, and the infirm may be multiplied at all their gates: they are given to the slaughter of the sword: it is well made for brightness, it is well made for the slaughter. 16. Go, be sharpened on the right, and on the left, wheresoever your face is turned. 17. And I also will strike my hand upon my hand, and I will vent my fury: I the Lord have spoken. 18. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 19. And you, son of man, set for yourself two ways, 20. that the sword of the king of Babylon may enter: out of one region shall two powers go forth, and a hand to prepare; at the beginning of the way of the city: you shall set it at the beginning of the way, that the sword may enter toward Rabbath, toward the children of Ammon, and toward Judea, and toward Jerusalem in the midst of it. 21. For the king of Babylon shall stand in the ancient way, at the beginning of the two ways, to divine a divination, to shake the rod, and to inquire of idols, and to explore the oracle of the liver on his right hand. 22. And divination was made over Jerusalem, to cast a trench, and to open the mouth in a cry, to lift up the voice with a shout, to cast a pit over its gates, and to cast a mound, and to build siege engines. 23. And it shall be to them as one divining a divination before them, and he shall keep the sabbaths to them, and he himself shall warn them of their new injustice, that he may remember. 24. Therefore thus says Adonai the Lord: For that you have recalled your injustices to memory in the uncovering of your impieties, that your sins might be seen, in all your impieties; and in all your doings, for that you have recalled; in these you shall be captured. 25. And you profane, ^D wicked prince of Israel, whose day arrives, in the time of the end of injustice. 26. Thus says Adonai the Lord: You have taken away your tiara, and have set upon yourself this crown, it shall not be such: you have humbled the high, and exalt

exalted the low. 27. I will set it in injustice, injustice, and it shall not be such until he comes to whom it belongs; and I will deliver it to him. 28. You will be food for the fire, your blood will be in the midst of your land: there will be no memory of you, because I the Lord have spoken.

Chapter XXII.

Therefore, O Oholibah, thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am stirring up your lovers against you, from whom your soul has departed; and I will bring them against you from every side, 23. the sons of Babylon, and all the Chaldeans, Phut, and Sud, and Coa, and all the sons of the Assyrians with them, choice young men, leaders and prefects, all of them triarii and men of name, all riding upon horses. 24. They will come against you from the north, with chariots and wheels, and a multitude of peoples, and shields, and bucklers; and they will set a guard around you. 25. And I will give judgment before their face, and they shall judge you with their judgments: and I will set my jealousy against you, and they shall deal with you in the wrath of fury. They shall take away your nose and your ears, and they shall cast the remainder of you to the sword: they shall take your sons and your daughters, and the fire shall devour the remainder of you: 26. and they shall strip you of your garments, and take the vessels of your glory. 27. And I will turn your impieties away from you, and your fornication from the land of Egypt: and you shall not lift up your eyes unto them, nor will you remember Egypt anymore. 28. For thus says the Lord God: Behold, I deliver you into the hands of those whom you hate, from whom your soul has departed. 29. And they shall deal with you in hatred, and they shall take away all your labors, and your troubles; and you shall be naked, and full of ignominy, and the ignominy of your fornication and of your impieties shall be revealed, and your fornication. 30. This has been done to you, because you whored after the nations, and were polluted by their cogitations. 31. You have walked in the way of your sister, and I will give her cup into your hands. 32. Thus says the Lord God: You shall drink your sister's cup, deep and wide; and it shall be for derision and mockery, abundant to fulfill drunkenness, 33. and you shall be filled with dissolution: the cup of corruption and destruction, the cup of your sister Samaria, 34. and you shall drink it, and shall drain it, and I will avert her festivals and her new moons; because I have spoken, says Adonai the Lord. 35. And the Lord said to me: Son of man, if you judge Oholah and Oholibah, you shall declare to them their iniquities; 37. because they committed adultery, and blood is in their hands, and their cogitations committed adultery, and their sons whom they bore to me they caused to pass through the fire.

Chapter XXIII

^A ...and in that day; and they were profaning my sabbaths, 39. and when they were slaughtering their children to their idols, they were entering into my sanctuaries in that day to profane them; and that they were doing so in the midst of my house, 40. and that for men coming from afar, to whom they had sent messengers to them, and immediately as they arrived, you washed yourself, and you were painting your eyes with eye-salve, and you were adorned with ornament, 41. and you were sitting upon a prepared bed, and a table set before his face: and my incense, and my oil, they were rejoicing in them, 42. ^B and the voices of harmony were striking up, and to the men coming from the assembly of men, inebriates from the desert, and they were giving bracelets into their hands, and a crown of glory upon their heads. 43. And I said: Do not those women commit adultery in these things? And even this work of a harlot has she fornicated? 44. And they were entering into her, just as they enter into a harlot woman; so they were entering unto Oholah and unto Oholibah, to do iniquity. 45. And just men, they shall avenge them with the vengeance of adulteresses, and with the vengeance of blood; because they are adulteresses, and blood is in their hands. 46. Because thus says the Lord God: Bring upon them an assembly, and give them over to tumult and plunder, 47. and let the assembly stone them with stones, and slay them with their swords; their sons and their daughters they shall kill, and their houses they shall burn with fire. 48. And I will turn away impiety from the land, and all women shall be instructed, and they shall not do according to their impieties. 49. And your impiety shall be given upon you, and you shall receive the sins of your thoughts, and you shall know that I am the Lord God.

To cause the earth to read upon him, 8. that fury might ascend in vengeance, so that it might be avenged: I have set his blood upon the smooth rock, that it might not cover him. 9. And much of its rust shall not go out of it, and its rust shall blush. 13. In your filth is boiling; for the things for which you defiled yourself, and were not purified from your filth, what if you shall not be purified any more, until I satisfy my fury in you? 14. I the Lord have spoken, and it shall come, and I will do it, I will not delay, nor will I pity, I will not relent: according to your ways, and according to your thoughts I will judge you, says the Lord Adonai. On account of this, I judge you according to your bloods, and according to your thoughts I will judge you, you who are unclean, and named, and much to provoke. 15. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 16. Son of man, behold I take away the desires of your eyes in the instruction of war, you shall not lament, nor shall you weep, nor shall tears come to you. 17. Groaning of blood, the mourning of the loins is this: your hair shall not be bound upon you, and your sandals on your feet, you shall not receive consolation on their lips, and you shall not eat the bread of men. 18. CHAP. XXIV.—1. And the word of the Lord came to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth of the month, saying: 2. Son of man, write for yourself the day, from this day, from which the king of Babylon has brought himself up against Jerusalem, from this day. 3. And speak a parable to the house that provokes, and you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord God: Set on the pot, set it on, and pour water into it, 4. and put pieces into it, every good piece, the thigh and the shoulder, cut from the bones, 5. taken from the choice of the flock, and kindle the bones under them. It has boiled, it has boiled over, and its bones have been cooked in the midst of it. 6. On account of this, thus says the Lord Adonai: O city of blood, the pot in which there is rust, and the rust has not gone out of it, he has brought it out limb by limb, the lot has not fallen upon it. 7. ^A Idumæa in the hand of my people Israel: and they shall execute it in Idumæa according to my wrath, and according to my fury, and they shall know my vengeance, says Adonai the Lord. 15. Concerning the foreigners. Therefore thus says Adonai the Lord: Because the foreigners have acted in vengeance, and have aroused vengeance, rejoicing from the heart, to destroy even forever; 16. because of this thus says Adonai the Lord: Behold, I stretch out my hand upon the foreigners, and I will destroy the Cretans, and I will perish the remnant dwelling upon the sea-coast. 17. And I will execute great vengeance upon them in the reproofs of fury; and they shall know that I am Adonai the Lord, when I have given my vengeance upon them.

CAP. XXV.

CHAPTER XXVI.

^A the Lord God to Tyre: Shall not the islands tremble at the sound of your ruin, and when your slain groan, when the sword is drawn in your midst? 16. And all the princes of the sea shall descend from their thrones, and shall take off their tiaras from their heads, and shall put off their varied garments; they shall be struck with astonishment, they shall sit upon the ground, and shall fear for their own destruction, and shall lament over you: 17. and they shall take up a lamentation over you, and say to you: How you have perished, and are dissolved out of the sea, the celebrated city, ☀ which was made strong in the sea, it and those who inhabit it, which gave its fear to all those who dwell in it? 18. And the islands shall fear from the day of your ruin, ✗ and the islands in the sea shall be disturbed ° by the going forth of your companion. 19. For thus says the Lord God: When I shall make you a desolate city, like the cities that are not inhabited, when I shall bring the abyss over you, and much water shall cover you. 20. And I shall make you descend to those who descend into the pit to the everlasting people, and I shall make you dwell in the depths of the earth, like the everlasting solitude with those who descend into the pit, that you may not be inhabited (r), nor rise again over the land of the living. ☀ And you shall be sought for, and shall not be found: for ever, says the Lord God.

CHAP. XXVII.

^A 28. at the sound of your outcry, your governors will fear. 29. And all who handle the oars will descend from their ships, the sailors and all the pilots of the sea will stand on the land, 30. and they will wail over you with their voice, and cry out bitterly, and cast dust upon their heads, and scatter ashes for themselves. 31. ☀ And they will make themselves bald for you, and put on sackcloth, and they will weep for you in bitterness of soul, and a bitter lament: 32. their sons will take up a lamentation for you, a dirge of Tyre: Who is like Tyre, which has been silenced in the midst of the sea? 33. How much, what reward have you found from the sea? You satisfied nations from your multitude, and with your mixtures you enriched all the kings of the earth. 34. Now you are broken in the sea, in the deep of the water your mixture, and all your assembly in your midst. 35. All who handle the oars have fallen; all the inhabitants of the isles were terrified over you, and their kings were struck with astonishment ^B and their faces were tearful over you. 36. The merchants among the nations whistled over you: you have become a ruin, and you will not be again for the age, says Adonai the Lord.

CHAPTER XXVIII.

CHAPTER XXIX.

^A saith the Lord God: Behold I am against you, Pharaoh, king of Egypt, you great dragon, who lie in the midst of your rivers, saying: The rivers are mine, and I made them. 4. I will put a bridle in your jaws, and I will fasten the fish of your river to your scales, and I will draw you out of the midst of your river; and all the fish of your river shall stick to your scales. 5. And I will cast you forth speedily, and all the fish of your river; you shall fall upon the face of the field; you shall not be taken up, neither shall you be gathered together: I have given you for food to the beasts of the earth, and to the fowls of heaven. 6. And all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am the Lord, because you have been a staff of a reed to the house of Israel: 7. when they took hold of you with their hand, you broke, and pierced all their shoulder: and when they leaned upon you, you broke, and weakened all their loins. 8. Therefore thus saith the Lord God: Behold, I will bring upon you the sword, and will destroy out of you man and beast. 9. And the land of Egypt shall be a desolation, and a solitude: and they shall know that I am the Lord: because you say: The rivers are mine, and I made them. 10. Therefore, behold I am against you, and against your rivers, and I will make the land of Egypt desolate, and with the sword, and in perdition, from Magdol to Syene, and even to the borders of Ethiopia. 11. No foot of man shall pass through it, and foot of beast shall not pass through it, and it shall not be inhabited for forty years. 12. And I will make the land of Egypt a desolation in the midst of the lands that are desolate, and its cities in the midst of the cities that are destroyed, shall be desolate for forty years: and I will scatter Egypt among the nations, and will disperse them through the countries. 13. For thus saith the Lord God: After forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the nations, where they had been scattered: 14. and I will bring back the captivity of Egypt, and will place them to inhabit the land of Pathros, in the land where they were born, and there shall be a humble ^C kingdom. 15. It shall be the most humble of all kingdoms, and it shall not lift itself up any more above the nations, and I will diminish them so that they shall not rule over the nations: 16. and they shall be no more a confidence to the house of Israel, teaching them iniquity, when they shall cleave after their hearts, and they shall know that I am the Lord God. 17. And it came to pass in the twenty-seventh year, in the first month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 18. Son of man, Nebuchodonosor king of Babylon made his army undergo great service against Tyre, every head was made bald, and every shoulder was peeled: and there was no reward given him, nor his army for Tyre, for the service that he rendered against it. 19. Therefore thus saith the Lord God: Behold I will give to Nebuchodonosor king of Babylon the land of Egypt, and he shall take the multitude thereof, and pillage the spoils thereof, and rob the prey thereof, and it shall be wages ^D for his army: 20. and for the service wherewith he served against Tyre, I have given him the land of Egypt, because they have labored for me. Thus saith the Lord God: 21. In that day a horn shall bud forth to the house of Israel, and I will give you an open mouth in the midst of them, and they shall know that I am the Lord.

Chapter XXX

1. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 2. Son of man, prophesy, and say: Thus saith the Lord God: Howl, O day, 3. for the day is near, and the day of the Lord is near, a day of cloud, it shall be the end of the nations. 4. And the sword shall come upon Egypt, and there shall be terror in Ethiopia, when the slain shall fall in Egypt, and the multitude thereof shall be taken, and its foundations shall be destroyed. 5. Persia, and Crete, and Lydia, and Libya, and all the rest, and the people of my covenant, shall fall with them by the sword. 6. Thus saith the Lord God: And the supporters of Egypt shall fall, and the pride of its strength shall be brought down from Magdol to Syene; they shall fall in it by the sword, saith the Lord God. 7. And they shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall have set a fire in Egypt, and all the helpers thereof shall be broken. 9. In that day shall messengers go forth from my face in ships, to destroy the confidence of Ethiopia, and there shall be terror among them in the day of Egypt; for behold it comes. 10. Thus saith the Lord God: I will destroy the multitude of Egypt by the hand of Nebuchodonosor the king of Babylon, 11. he and his people with him, the destroyers, who have been sent to destroy the land: and they shall draw their swords against Egypt, and the land shall be filled with the slain: 12. and I will make the rivers dry, and will deliver the land into the hand of the wicked: and I will lay waste the land and all the fullness thereof, by the hands of strangers, I the Lord have spoken it. 13. Thus saith the Lord God: I will also destroy the idols, and I will make an end of the statues of Memphis, and there shall be no more a prince of the land of Egypt, and I will cause terror in the land of Egypt. 14. And I will destroy the land of Pathros, and will make a fire in Tanis, and will execute judgments in No. 15. And I will pour out my fury upon Sin, the strength of Egypt, and will destroy the multitude of Memphis, 16. and I will put a fire in Egypt, and Sais shall be in pain, and No shall be destroyed, and the waters shall be let out. 17. The young men of On and of Bubastus shall fall by the sword, and the women shall go into captivity. 18. And in Thaphnes the day shall be darkened, when I shall break there the sceptres of Egypt, and the pride of its strength shall cease therein: a cloud shall cover it, and its daughters shall be led into captivity 19. And I will execute judgments in Egypt,

Son of man, I have broken the arms of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and lo, he is not bound up, to give him medicine, so that a bandage might be applied to him, to give him strength to hold the sword. 22. Therefore thus saith the Lord God: Behold, I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt, and I will break his strong arms, and cause the sword to fall out of his hand: 23. and I will scatter Egypt among the nations, and will disperse them into the regions: 24. and I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and I will put my sword in his hand, and he shall bring it against Egypt, and carry away its captivity, and take its spoil. 25. And I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon: but the arms of Pharaoh shall fall. And they shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall have put my sword in the hands of the king of Babylon, and he shall have brought it upon the land of Egypt. 26. And I will scatter Egypt among the nations, and disperse them into the regions, and all the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord.

By the swords of giants I will overthrow thy strength; all the spoilers of the nations, and they shall destroy the pride of Egypt, and all her strength shall be crushed. 13. I will also destroy all her beasts from the many waters, and the foot of man shall not trouble them, nor shall the hoof of cattle trample them. 14. Then shall their waters be quiet, and their rivers shall flow like oil, saith the Lord God. 15. When I shall have made the land of Egypt a desert, and it shall be desolate, when I shall have dispersed all who dwell in it, they shall know that I am the Lord. 16. It is a lamentation, and they shall lament over it; the daughters of the nations shall lament over Egypt, and over all her strength shall they lament it, saith the Lord God. 17. And it came to pass in the twelfth year, in the first month, on the fifteenth of the month, that the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 18. Son of man, lament over the strength of Egypt, and cast her down, even her and the daughters of famous nations, into the lowest part of the earth, with those that go down into the pit. 19. ^C Is thy beauty more excellent than others? Go down, and sleep with the uncircumcised, in the midst of them that are slain by the sword; they shall fall with it, 20. and all her strength shall sleep. 21. And the giants shall tell thee: Be thou in the depth of the pit: whom dost thou surpass? Go down, and sleep with the uncircumcised, in the midst of them that are slain by the sword. 22. There is Assur, and all his congregation; all are slain, having been given there, and their grave is in the depths of the pit: and his whole congregation is made, about his grave are all the slain, who fell by the sword: 23. who gave their terror upon the land of the living: 24. there is Elam, and all his strength about his grave: all are slain, who fell by the sword, and who go down uncircumcised into the lowest part of the earth, who gave their terror upon the land of the living, and have received their punishment with those that go down into the pit, 25. in the midst of the slain ^D with them. 26. And they do not sleep with the giants, who fell from of old, who went down to hell with their weapons of war, and placed their swords under their heads, and their iniquities were upon their bones, because they terrified the mighty in the land of the living. 28. Even thou, in the midst of the uncircumcised, shalt be broken, and shalt sleep with them that are slain by the sword. 29. There is Edom, and her kings, and all her princes, who gave their strength for the sword: these have slept with the slain, with those that go down into the pit. 30. There are all the princes of the north, and all the Assurians, who came down with the slain, in their terror, and were confounded by their strength; they slept uncircumcised with them that are slain by the sword, and have received their punishment with them that go down into the pit. 31. Pharao shall see them, and shall be comforted over all his strength, even the slain by the sword of Pharao, and all his army, saith the Lord God. 32. For I have given my fear in the land of the living, and he shall sleep in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that are slain by the sword, Pharao, and all his multitude, saith the Lord God.

Chapter XXXIII

iniquities are upon us, and we pine away in them, and how shall we live? 11. Say to them: As I live, saith Adonai the Lord, I desire not the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way, and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil way: and why will you die, O house of Israel? 12. And thou, son of man, say to the children of thy people: The justice of the just shall not deliver him in the day whereon he shall err: and the wickedness of the wicked shall not hurt him in the day whereon he shall turn from his wickedness: and the just shall not be able to live in his wickedness on the day that he shall sin. 13. When I shall say to the just that he shall surely live, and he, trusting in his justice, commit iniquity: all his justices shall be forgotten, and in his iniquity, which he hath committed, in the same he shall die. 14. And when I shall say to the wicked: Thou shalt surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do judgment and justice, 15. And if that wicked man restore the pledge, and render what he had robbed, and walk in the commandments of life, so that he do no unjust thing: he shall surely live, and shall not die. 16. None of his sins, which he hath committed, shall be imputed to him: because he hath done judgment and justice, he shall surely live. 17. And the children of thy people say: The way of the Lord is not right: whereas their way is not right. 18. For when the just man turneth away from his justice, and committeth iniquities, he shall die in them. 19. And when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness, and doth judgment, and justice, he shall live in them. 20. And you say: The way of the Lord is not right. I will judge every one of you according to his ways, O house of Israel. 21. And it came to pass in the twelfth year, in the tenth month, in the fifth day of the month of our captivity, that one who had fled out of Jerusalem came to me, saying: The city is laid waste. 22. And the hand of the Lord had been upon me in the evening, before he came: and he opened my mouth till he came to me in the morning, and my mouth being opened, I was silent no more. 23. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 24. Son of man, they that dwell in these desert places in the land of Israel, talk, saying: Abraham was one, and he inherited the land, but we are many; the land is given to us in possession. 25. Therefore say to them: Thus saith the Lord God: You that eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes to your abominations, and that shed blood: shall you possess the land by inheritance? 26. You stood on your swords, you have committed abominations, and every one hath defiled the wife of his neighbor: and shall you possess the land by inheritance? 27. Thus shalt thou say to them: Thus saith Adonai the Lord: As I live, they that dwell in the desert places, shall fall by the sword: and he that is in the field, shall be given to the beasts to be devoured: and they that are in holds, and in caves, shall die of the pestilence. 28. And I will make the land desolate and waste, and the pride of her strength shall perish, and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, because there is none to pass by them. 29. And they shall know that I am the Lord: when I shall have made the land waste and desolate, for all their abominations which they have committed. 30. And thou, son of man, the children of thy people talk of thee by the walls, and in the doors of the houses, and one speaketh to another neighbor of his, saying: Come, and let us hear what is the word that cometh forth from the Lord. 31. And they come to thee, as if a people were coming in, and my people sit before thee, and hear thy words, and do them not: for they turn them into a song of their mouth, and their heart goeth after their covetousness. 32. And thou art to them as a musical song which is sung with a sweet and agreeable voice: and they hear thy words, and do them not. 33. And when that which was foretold cometh, then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them. ^B

Cap. XXXIV.—1. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 2. Son of man, prophesy concerning the shepherds of Israel: prophesy, and say to them: Thus saith the Lord God: Woe to the shepherds of Israel, that fed themselves! should not the flocks be fed by the shepherds? 3. You eat the milk, and you clothed yourselves with the wool, and you killed that which was fat: but my flock you did not feed. 4. The weak you have not strengthened, and that which was sick you have not healed, and that which was broken you have not bound up, and that which was driven away you have not brought again, and that which was lost you have not sought: but you ruled over them with rigor, and with a high hand. 5. And my sheep were scattered, because there was no shepherd: and they became the prey of all the beasts of the field, and were scattered. 6. My sheep have wandered in every mountain, and in every high hill: and my flocks were scattered upon all the face of the earth, and there was none that sought them, there was none, I say, that sought them. 7. Therefore, ye shepherds, hear the word of the Lord. 8. As I live, saith Adonai the Lord, forasmuch as my flocks have been made a spoil, and my sheep are become meat to all the beasts of the field, because there was no shepherd: for my shepherds did not inquire after my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flocks: 9. Therefore, ye shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 10. Thus saith the Lord God: Behold I myself come upon the shepherds, I will require my flock at their hand, and I will cause them to cease from feeding the flock any more, neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more: and I will deliver my flock from their mouth, and it shall no more be meat for them. 11. For thus saith the Lord God: Behold I myself will seek my sheep, and will visit them. 12. As the shepherd visiteth his flock in the day when he shall be ^{C D}

^A in the midst of his sheep that were scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all the places where they have been scattered in the day of cloud and darkness. 13. And I will bring them out from the peoples, and will gather them out of the countries, and will bring them into their own land, and will feed them upon the mountains of Israel, and in the valleys, and in all the habitable places of the land: 14. I will feed them in good pastures, and their folds shall be upon the high mountains of Israel, and they shall sleep there, and shall rest in goodly delights, and shall be fed in a fat pasture upon the mountains of Israel. 15. I will feed my sheep, and I will cause them to lie down, and they shall know that I am the Lord: thus saith the Lord God. 16. That which was lost, I will seek; and that which was driven away, I will bring again; and that which was broken, I will bind up; and that which was weak, I will strengthen; and that which was fat, I will guard; and I will feed them with judgment. 17. And for you, O my sheep, thus saith the Lord God: Behold I will judge between sheep and sheep, the rams and the he-goats. 18. And is it not enough for you that you fed upon good pasture, that you should also tread down with your feet the residue of your pasture, and that you drank of the clear waters, and that you troubled the residue with your feet? 19. And my sheep fed on what had been trodden by your feet, and they drank what had been troubled by your feet. 20. Therefore thus saith the Lord God unto them: Behold I will judge between the strong sheep and the weak sheep. 21. Because you jostled with sides and shoulders, and pushed with your horns all that were weak, till they were scattered abroad. 22. And I will save my flock, and they shall be no more a prey, and I will judge between ram and ram, 23. and I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, my servant David: he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd: 24. and I, the Lord, will be their God, and David my prince in the midst of them. I the Lord have spoken. 25. And I will make a covenant of peace with David, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell in the desert ^B in confidence, and shall sleep in the woods. 26. And I will give them round about my mountain the blessing: and I will give down rain in its season, there shall be showers of blessing. 27. And the trees that are in the field shall yield their fruit, and the earth shall give her increase: and they shall be upon their land in peace, and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall have broken the bonds of their yoke: and shall deliver them out of the hand of those that had made them serve. 28. And they shall no more be a prey to the nations, and the beasts of the land shall not devour them: and they shall dwell in peace, and there shall be none to make them afraid. 29. And I will raise up for them a plantation of peace, and they shall no more be consumed with famine in the land, neither shall they bear any more the reproach of the nations, 30. and they shall know that I am the Lord their God with them, and they are my people: the house of Israel, saith the Lord God. 31. And you, my sheep, and the sheep of my flock, are men, and I am the Lord your God, saith the Lord God.

Chapter XXXV

1. And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying: 2. Son of man, set thy face against Mount Seir, and prophesy against it, 3. and say unto it: Thus saith the Lord God: Behold I am against thee, O Mount Seir, and I will stretch out my hand upon thee, and I will make thee a desert, and thou shalt be laid waste: 4. and I will make thy cities desolate, and thou shalt be a desert, and thou shalt know that I am the Lord. 5. Because thou hast been an everlasting enemy, and hast shut up the children of Israel in the hands of the sword in the time of their affliction, in the time of their iniquity, to the end: 6. therefore as I live, saith the Lord God, since thou hast sinned unto blood, and blood shall pursue thee: since thou hast hated blood, even blood shall pursue thee. 7. And I will make Mount Seir a desert and a waste, and will destroy out of it man and beast, 8. and I will fill his mountains with thy slain ones, and thy hills, and thy valleys, and in all thy plains shall they that are slain with the sword fall in thee. 9. I will make thee an everlasting desert, and thy cities shall not be inhabited any more, and thou shalt know that I am the Lord. 10. Because thou hast said: The two nations and the two lands shall be mine, and I will possess them, and the Lord is there: 11. therefore as I live, saith the Lord God, I will do according to thy enmity, and according to thy envy, which thou ^C hast exercised, out of thy hatred against them: and I will make myself known unto thee, when I shall have judged thee, 12. and thou shalt know that I am the Lord: I have heard the voice of thy blasphemies, and thou hast said: The mountains of Israel are given to us to devour, 13. and you have risen proudly against me with your mouth, and have spoken many words against me, I have heard it. 14. Thus saith the Lord God: When the whole earth rejoiceth, I will make thee a desert. 15. As thou hast rejoiced at the inheritance of Israel, because it was laid waste, so will I do to thee: thou shalt be a desert, O Mount Seir, and all Idumea shall be consumed, and they shall know that I am the Lord their God.

Chapter XXXVI

1. And thou, son of man, prophesy unto the mountains of Israel, and say: Ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord. 2. Thus saith the Lord God: Because the enemy hath said of you: Aha, the everlasting solitudes are given to us for a possession. 3. Therefore prophesy, and say: Thus saith the Lord God: Because you have been brought to corruption by all the nations, and because you were despised and hated by all the nations that are round about you, that you might be a possession to the rest of the nations, and you have ascended upon the lips of tongues, and into the reproach of the nations, 4. therefore,

^A mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord Adonai: Thus saith the Lord God to the mountains, and to the hills, and to the torrents, and to the valleys, and to the devastated places, and to the ruined ones, and to the abandoned cities, which have been made for a prey, and for a trampling to the nations that are left round about. 5. Therefore ^B thus saith the Lord God: Surely in the fire of my jealousy have I spoken against the residue of the nations, and against all Edom, because they have given my land unto themselves for a possession with joy, with contempt of soul, that they might cast it out for a prey. 6. Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel, and say to the mountains, and to the hills, and to the little valleys, and to the valleys: Thus saith the Lord God: Behold, I have spoken in my jealousy and in my fury, because you have endured the reproach of the nations. 7. Therefore ^C thus saith the Lord Adonai: Behold, I have lifted up my hand against the nations which are round about you: they shall receive their own contempt. 8. But you, O mountains of Israel, shall yield your branches, and shall bear your fruit for my people Israel: for they are ready to come. 9. For behold, I am for you, and will respect you, and you shall be tilled and sown: 10. and I will multiply men upon you, all the house of Israel, even all of it; and the cities shall be inhabited, and the places that were desolate shall be rebuilt. 11. And I will multiply upon you men and cattle, and they shall increase and multiply; and I will cause you to inhabit as you did in your beginning, and I will do better unto you than at your beginnings: and you shall know that I am the Lord. 12. And I will cause men, even my people Israel, to walk upon you; and they shall possess you, and you shall be their inheritance, and you shall no more henceforth be bereaved of them. 13. Thus saith the Lord God: Because they say unto you, Thou art a devourer of men, and hast bereaved thy nation; 14. therefore thou shalt devour men no more, neither shalt thou bereave thy nation any more, saith the Lord God. 15. Neither will I cause men to hear in thee the shame of the nations any more, neither shalt thou bear the reproach of the peoples any more, and thy people shall not be bereaved any more, saith the Lord God. 16. And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying: 17. Son of man, when the house of Israel dwelt in their own land, they defiled it by their ways and by their doings: their way was before me as the uncleanness of a menstruous woman. 18. And I poured my fury upon them for the blood that they had shed upon the earth, and for their idols with which they had polluted it: 19. and I scattered them among the nations, and I dispersed them through the countries: according to their way and according to their sin I judged them. 20. And when they entered into the nations, whither they went, they polluted my holy name, when they said of them, These are the people of the Lord, and are gone forth out of his land. 21. But I had pity upon them ^D for my holy name, which the house of Israel had polluted among the nations, whither they went. 22. Therefore say unto the house of Israel: Thus saith the Lord God: I do not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for my holy name's sake, which you have polluted among the nations, whither you went. 23. And I will sanctify my great name, which was profaned among the nations, which you have polluted in the midst of them; and the nations shall know that I am the Lord, saith the Lord Adonai, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes, 24. and I will take you from among the nations, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land, 25. and I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be cleansed from all your filthiness, and from all your idols will I cleanse you. 26. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. 27. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and you shall keep my judgments, and do them. 28. And you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and you shall be my people, and I will be to you for a God. 29. And I will save you from all your uncleannesses, and I will call for the corn, 30. and I will increase it, and I will lay no famine upon you: and I will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that you may bear no more the reproach of famine among the nations. 31. Then shall you remember your own evil ways, and your doings that were not good, and you shall loathe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations. 32. Not for your sakes do I this, saith the Lord God, be it known unto you: be ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel. 33. Thus saith the Lord Adonai: In the day that I shall have cleansed you from all your iniquities, I will also cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places shall be built, 34. and the desolate land shall be tilled, whereas it lay desolate in the sight of all that passed by. 35. And they shall say, This land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are become fenced and inhabited. 36. Then the nations that are left round about you shall know that I the Lord build the ruined places, and plant that which was desolate: I the Lord have spoken it, and I will do it. 37. Thus saith the Lord God: I will yet for this be enquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them: I will increase them with men like a flock, 38. as the holy flock, as the flock of Jerusalem in her solemn feasts; so shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of men: and they shall know that I am the Lord.

Chapter XXXVII

^A of the midst of the nations, where they have entered, and I will gather them from all sides, and will bring them into the land of Israel, 22. and I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel, and one prince shall be king over them all: and they shall no more be two nations, neither shall they be divided any more into two kingdoms, 23. that they may no more be defiled with their idols, nor with their abominations, nor with all their iniquities: and I will deliver them from all their iniquities, in which they have sinned, and I will cleanse them, and they shall be my people, and I will be their God. 24. And my servant David shall be prince over them, and there shall be one shepherd of all of them: because they will walk in my precepts, and will keep my judgments, and will do them, 25. and they shall dwell upon the land which I gave to my servant Jacob, in which their fathers dwelt, and they shall dwell upon it, they and their children, and their children’s children, even for ever: and David my servant shall be their prince for ever. 26. And I will make a covenant of peace with them, a covenant that shall be for ever with them: and I will place them, and will multiply them: and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for ever. 27. And my tabernacle shall be with them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 28. And the nations shall know that I am the Lord, who sanctify them, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them. 2. And he led me about through the middle of the nations, where they had entered, and behold they were very many upon the face of the plain, and behold they were exceeding dry. 3. And he said to me: Son of man, shall these bones live? And I said: O Lord God, thou ^B knowest. 4. And he said to me: Prophesy concerning these bones, and say to them: Ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. 5. Thus saith the Lord God to these bones: Behold I will send the spirit of life into you, 6. and I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and will extend skin over you, and I will put my spirit in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord. There was a sound, when I prophesied, and behold a commotion, and the bones moved, bone to its connection. 8. And I saw, and behold the sinews and the flesh were coming up upon them, and the skin was stretched out over them from above, and the spirit was not in them. 9. And he said to me: Prophesy to the spirit, prophesy, O son of man, and say to the spirit: Thus saith the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O spirit, and blow upon these slain, and let them live. 10. And I prophesied as he commanded me: and the spirit entered into them, and they lived, and they stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great congregation. 11. And the Lord spoke to me, saying: Son of man, all these bones are the house of Israel; they say: Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost, we are made void. 12. Therefore prophesy, and say to them: Thus saith the Lord God: Behold I will open your graves, and will bring you ^C out of your graves, O my people, and I will bring you into the land of Israel, 13. and you shall know that I am the Lord, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and have brought you out of your graves. 14. And I will put my spirit in you, and you shall live, and I will set you upon your own land, and you shall know that I the Lord have spoken, and done it, saith the Lord God. 15. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 16. And thou, son of man, take thee a stick one, and write upon it for Juda, and for the children of Israel joined to him: and take another stick, and write upon it for Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel, and of all them that are joined to him. 17. And join them one to the other into one stick, that they may be in thy hand. 18. And when the children of thy people shall speak to thee, saying: Wilt thou not tell us what these things mean to thee? 19. And thou shalt say to them: Thus saith the Lord God: Behold I will take the tribe of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel, which are joined to him, and will give them together with the tribe of Juda, and will make them one stick, and they shall be one in the hand of Juda. 20. And the sticks upon which thou hast written shall be in thy hand before them. 21. And thou shalt say to them: Thus saith the Lord God: Behold I will take the whole house of Israel ^D

Chapter XXXVIII

inhabitants without walls, and having neither bars nor gates, 12. to take a spoil, and to prey upon their prey, to turn thy hand upon a land that is desolate, that is inhabited, and upon a people that is gathered out of many nations, which have gotten cattle and possessions, dwelling on the navel of the earth. 13. Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Carthage, and all the villages thereof, shall say to thee: Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou assembled thy company to take a prey, to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, for a great spoil? 14. Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog: Thus saith the Lord God: In that day, when my people Israel dwelleth in safety, shalt thou not arise? 15. And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army. 16. And thou shalt come up against my people Israel, as a cloud to cover the land: it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the nations may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee before them. 17. Thus saith the Lord God unto Gog: Art thou he of whom I have spoken in old time, by the hand of my servants the prophets of Israel, who prophesied in those days and years, that I would bring thee against them? 18. And it shall come to pass at the same time, when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord God, that my fury shall come up in my face. 19. For in my jealousy and in the fire of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel, 20. so that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the valleys shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground. 21. And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord God: every man's sword shall be against his brother. 22. And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. 23. Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the Lord.

Chapter XXXIX

22. And the house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God from this day and henceforth. 23. And all the nations shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their sins, because they dealt treacherously with me, and I turned my face from them, and delivered them into the hands of their enemies, and they all fell by the sword. 24. According to their uncleanness and according to their iniquities I did to them, and I turned my face from them. 25. Therefore thus saith the Lord God: Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and will have mercy upon the house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name. 26. And they shall take their shame, and their injustice, which they did unjustly, when they dwelt upon their own land in peace, and there shall be none to make them afraid, 27. when I have brought them again from the nations, and gathered them out of the lands of the nations: and I shall be sanctified in them in the sight of the nations. 28. And they shall know that I am the Lord their God, when I have appeared to them among the nations, and I will gather them upon their own land, and will not leave any of them there any more: 29. and I will not avert my face from them any more, for I have poured out my fury upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord God.

CAP. XL.

he measured the atrium from gate to gate, a hundred cubits. 24. And he led me to the south, and behold a gate looking to the south, and he measured it, and its Thee, and Eleu, and Elammo, according to these measures. 25. And its windows, and those of Elammo round about, were like the windows of Elam; its length was fifty cubits, and its breadth twenty-five cubits. 26. And its ladder had seven steps, and Elammo was within, and its palms, one on this side, and one on that, upon Eleu. 27. And the gate was opposite the gate of the inner atrium to the south: and he measured the atrium from gate to gate, a breadth of a hundred cubits to the south. 28. And he brought me into the inner atrium, to the gate that looked to the south, and he measured the gate, that which looked to the east, according to these measures. 29. And its Thee, and Eleu, and Elammo, according to these measures; and its windows, and those of Elammo, round about, were fifty cubits in length, and twenty-five in breadth. ^A 30. And the vestibules round about were twenty-five cubits in length, and five cubits in breadth. 31. And Elammo led to the outer atrium, and its palms were upon Eleu, and its ladder had eight steps. 32. And he brought me into the gate looking to the way of the east, and he measured it according to these measures. 33. And its Thee, and Eleu, and Elammo, according to these measures, and its windows, and those of Elammo round about, were fifty cubits in length, and twenty-five in breadth. 34. And Elammo led to the inner atrium, and its palms were before Eleu on this side and on that, and it had eight steps. 35. And he brought me to the gate that looked to the north, and he measured it according to these measures. 36. And its Thee, and Eleu, and Elammo, and its windows, were round about, and Elammo was fifty cubits in length, and twenty-five cubits in breadth. 37. And Elammo led into the outer atrium, and the palms of Eleu were on this side and on that, and it had eight steps. 38. And its chambers, and its gates, and its Elammo were over the gates, and there they wash the holocaust. 39. And in the Elammo of the second gate were two tables on this side, and two tables on that, that they might sacrifice therein the holocaust, and that for sin, and that for ignorance. 40. And at the south of the reach of the holocausts, at the threshold of the gate looking to the north, were two tables to the east, and at the south of the other, and at the Elam of the gate were two tables to the east. 41. Four tables on this side, and four tables on that, at the south of the south gate, ^B were the tables for the victims upon which they shall slaughter the victims: four tables for holocausts of hewn stone, the length being one cubit and a half, and the breadth one cubit and a half, and the height one cubit: upon them they shall place the vessels in which they slaughter the holocausts and the victims there. 43. And the ledges were a palm in breadth to them, within round about, and upon the tables were coverings above, that they might be sheltered from the rain and from the drought. 44. And he brought me into the inner atrium, and behold two chambers in the inner atrium, one at the south of the gate, looking to the north, which leads to the south, and one at the south of the gate, which leads to the south, but looking to the north. 45. And he said to me: This chamber, which looks to the south, is for the priests keeping the custody of the house; 46. and the chamber, looking to the north, is for the priests keeping the custody of the altar: these are the sons of Sadduc, who approach from Levi to the Lord, to minister to him. 47. And he measured the atrium, the length being a hundred cubits, and the breadth a hundred cubits, on its four sides, and the altar was in front of the house. 48. And he brought me into the Elam of the house; and he measured the Elam, five cubits in breadth on this side, and five cubits on that, and the breadth of the gate was fourteen cubits, and the sides of the Elam gate were three cubits on this side and three cubits on that. 49. And the length of the Elam was twenty cubits, and the breadth eleven cubits, and ten steps ascended upon it, and there were columns upon the Elam, one on this side, and one on that. ^C

Chapter XLI

One interval for the wall of the house in the sides round about, so that it might be reached for seeing, that the walls of the house might not touch at all. 7. And the breadth of the higher side [was] near to the addition of the sides from the wall to the upper parts round about the house, so that the house might be widened from above, and from the lower it might ascend to the higher, and from the middle to the upper, having three stories. 8. And the house had a height all around, and an interval between the sides equal to a reed of six cubits. 9. And the breadth of the wall of the side [was] five cubits, and the remaining space between the sides of the house, 10. and between the chambers, a breadth of twenty cubits, the circumference of the house round about. 11. And the doors of the chambers [were] over the remaining space of one door, which was toward the north; and one door toward the south; and the breadth of the light of the remaining place of the oratory [was] five cubits round about. 12. And that which separated before the face of the remaining space [was a] way: as toward the sea, a breadth of seventy cubits, the breadth of the separating wall [was] five cubits round about, and its length ninety cubits. 13. And he measured against the house: a length of a hundred cubits, and the remaining space, and the partitions, and their walls, a length of a hundred cubits. 14. And the breadth before the face of the house, and the remaining space which was opposite, [was] a hundred cubits. 15. And he measured the length of the partition before the face of the remaining space which was behind that house, and the remaining space on this side and on that side [was] a hundred cubits, including the length; and the temple, and the corners, and the outer Elam, were overshadowed. 16. And the windows of the lattices shone round about for three [tiers], as if for looking through; and the house, and what was nearby, [was] covered with wood round about, and the ground of the house, and from the ground of the house even to the windows: and the windows were open in triple tiers, as if for looking through, 17. and even to the house near the interior, and even to the exterior, and over every wall round about, within and without, were the measurements, Cherub and Cherub: two faces to the Cherub, 19. the face of a man toward the palm on this side and on that, and the face of a lion toward the palm on this side and on that; the whole house was carved round about. 20. [From the] earth even to the ceiling, Cherubim and palms were carved. 21. And the sanctuary and the temple [were] square, before the face of the holy things, [with a] vision like the front. 22. The altar of wood [was] of three cubits [in] height, and its length [was] of two cubits; and it had its corners, and its base, and its walls were of wood. And he said to me: This is the table which is before the face of the Lord. And two doors [belonged] to the temple, and to the Sanctuary two doors. 23. 24. For the two doors were turning on hinges: two doors for one, and two doors for the second door. 25. And the carvings upon them, and upon the doors of the temple, [were] Cherubim and palms, according to the carving of the holy things; and the timbers of the front were against the face of the Elam on the outside. 26. And the windows were hidden; and he measured from here and from there, into the ceilings of the Elam, and the sides of the house were joined.

Chapter XLII

and according to the entrances which are at the beginning of the walkway, up to the light of the moment of the reed, and towards the east for entering upon them. 13. And he said to me: The chambers which are to the north, and the chambers which are to the south, which are towards the face of the intervals, these are the chambers of the Sanctuary, in which the priests, the sons of Zadok, who approach the Lord, shall eat in the holy of holies, and there they shall place the holy of holies, and the sacrifice, and that which is for sin, and that which is for ignorance, because the place is holy. 14. They shall not enter there except the priests, they shall not go out from the Sanctuary into the outer court, ^A that they may always be holy, who offer: and they shall not touch their garments, with which they minister in them, because they are holy: and they shall put on other garments, when they touch the people. 15. And the measurement of the house was finished internally. And he led me out by way of the gate, which looks towards the east, and he measured the model of the house all around in order. 16. And he stood towards the south of the gate, which looks towards the east, and he measured five hundred by the reed of the measurement. 17. And he turned to the north, and he measured that which is before the face of the north, five hundred cubits by the reed of the measurement. 18. And he turned to the west, and measured five hundred cubits by the reed of the measurement around. 19. And he turned to the south, and measured towards the south, five hundred by the reed of the measurement, 20. and in four parts he measured by the same reed: and he arranged it, and their hedge around, of five hundred cubits to the east, and five hundred cubits the width, to distinguish between the Holy and between the bulwark, which is of the order of the house.

Chapter XLIII

the four corners of the mercy seat, and upon the base round about, and you shall sprinkle upon it, and they shall cleanse it. 21. And they shall take the calf, which is for sin, and it shall be burned in a separate place of the house outside the Sanctuary. 22. And on the second day they shall take two unblemished kids of the goats for sin, and they shall cleanse the altar, as they cleansed it with the calf. 23. And after you have finished the purification, they shall offer an unblemished calf from the oxen, and an unblemished ram from the flock, 24. and you shall offer them before the Lord: and the priests shall sprinkle salt upon them, and they shall offer them as burnt offerings to the Lord. 25. For seven days you shall prepare a kid for sin daily, and a calf from the oxen, and a ram from the flock, unblemished shall they prepare 26. for seven days: and they shall cleanse the altar, and purge it, and they shall fill their hands. 27. And when they have finished the days, it shall be that from the eighth day, and thenceforth, the priests shall offer upon the altar your burnt offerings, and those of your peace offerings: and I will accept you, says the Lord God. ^B

Chapter XLIV

1. And he turned me back towards the way of the outer gate of the Sanctuaries, which looks towards the east, and it was shut. 2. And the Lord said to me: This gate shall be shut, it shall not be opened, and no man shall pass through it, because the Lord God of Israel has entered through it, and it shall be shut. 3. Because the leader himself shall sit in it, so that he may eat bread before the Lord: by the way of the porch of the gate he shall enter, and by its way he shall go out. 4. And he brought me by the way of the gate, which is to the north against the house; and I looked, and behold the house of the Lord was full of the glory of the Lord: and I fell upon my face. 5. And the Lord said to me: Son of man, set your heart, and see with your eyes, and with your ears hear all that I speak with you according to all the precepts of the house of the Lord, and all its laws. And you shall set your heart in the entrance of the house according to all its exits, and in all the Sanctuaries. 6. And you shall say to the rebellious house, to the house of Israel: Thus says the Lord God: Let it suffice you of all your iniquities, O house of Israel, 7. because you bring in strangers uncircumcised in heart, and uncircumcised in flesh, that they may be in my Sanctuaries, and profaned them, when you offer my bread, the fat, and the blood: and you have transgressed my covenant in all your iniquities, 8. and you have not kept the charge of my Sanctuaries; and you have set yourselves to keep the charges in my Sanctuaries. 9. For this reason says the Lord God: Every stranger uncircumcised in heart, and uncircumcised in flesh, shall not enter into my Sanctuary among all the strangers, who are in the midst of the house of Israel, 10. but the Levites, who went far from me, when Israel strayed, ^C who strayed from me after their own thoughts, and they shall receive their iniquity, 11. and they shall be in my Sanctuaries ministers, porters over the gates of the house, and ministers to the house: these shall immolate the burnt offerings, and sacrifices for the people, and these shall stand before the people, to minister to them, 12. for the reason that they ministered to them before the face of their idols; and it became to the house of Israel a stumbling block of iniquity. Therefore I have lifted up my hand over them, says the Lord God, and they shall receive their iniquity: 13. and they shall not approach to me, to exercise the priesthood for me, nor to offer to all the Sanctuaries of the children of Israel, nor to my Holy of Holies: and they shall receive their ignominy in their error, in which they strayed. 14. And I will make them keep the charges of the house in all its works, and in all that they shall do in it. 15. The priests Levites, the sons of Sadduc, who kept the charge of my Sanctuaries when the house of Israel strayed from me: they shall approach to me, to minister to me, and shall stand before my face, to offer to me sacrifice, the fat, and the blood, says the Lord God. 16. These shall enter into my Sanctuary, and these shall approach my table, to minister to me, and they shall keep my charges. 17. And it shall be, when they enter the gates of the inner court, they shall wear linen vestments, they shall not wear wool, when they minister in the gate of the inner court, and inwardly. 18. Linen head-coverings shall be upon their heads, and linen trousers shall be upon their loins, and they shall not gird themselves with sweat. 19. And when they go out into the outer court to the people, they shall put off their vestments, in which they minister in them, and they shall place them in the separate chambers of the Sanctuary, and they shall put on other vestments, and they shall not sanctify the people with their vestments. 20. And they shall not shave their heads, and they shall not shave their hair, they shall cover their heads. 21. And no priest shall drink wine, when they enter the inner court. 22. And a widow, and a divorced woman they shall not take to themselves for wives, but a virgin from the seed of the house of Israel: ^D but a widow, if she was a widow of a priest, they shall take. 23. And they shall teach my people between holy and profane, and between unclean and clean they shall make them know. 24. And in the judgment of blood they shall stand to judge: they shall judge my justifications, and they shall judge my judgments, and they shall keep my laws, and my precepts in all my solemnities, and they shall sanctify my sabbaths. 25. And upon the soul of a man they shall not enter, to defile themselves, but for father, and for mother, and for son, and for daughter, and for brother, and for sister, who has not been to a husband, shall he defile himself. 26. And after he has been cleansed, seven days they shall number to himself. 27. And on the day that he enters into the Sanctuary into the inner court, to minister in the Holy place, he shall offer his purification, says the Lord God. The end.

28. And it shall be to them for an inheritance: I am their inheritance; and a possession shall not be given to them among the children of Israel, for I am their possession. 29. And the sacrifices, and that which is for sins, and that which is for ignorance, these they shall eat, and every separation in Israel shall be theirs: 30. the first-fruits of all things, and the first-born of all things, and all separations, of all your first-fruits, shall belong to the priests: and the first-fruits of your produce you shall give to the priest, that he may place blessings upon your houses. 31. And everything dead, and that which is captured by beasts, of bird and of cattle, the priests shall not eat.

Cap. XLV. — 1. And when you measure the land for an inheritance, you shall separate the first-fruits to the Lord, a holy portion of the land, twenty-five thousand in length, and ten thousand in breadth: it shall be holy in all its borders round about. 2. And there shall be from this a Sanctuary, five hundred by five hundred, square round about, and fifty cubits as a space for them round about. 3. And from this measure you shall measure a length of twenty-five thousand, and a breadth of ten thousand: and in it shall be the Sanctuary, the Holy of Holies. 4. A holy portion of the land shall be for the priests who minister in the Sanctuary, and it shall be for them who draw near to minister to the Lord: and it shall be for them a place for houses, separated for their Sanctuary. 5. And twenty-five thousand in length, and a breadth of ten thousand shall be for the Levites who minister to the house, for them as a possession, cities to dwell in. 6. And you shall give as a possession of the city, five thousand in breadth, and twenty-five thousand in length, just as the first-fruits of the Sanctuaries shall be for the whole house of Israel. 7. And for the prince from this and from that, in the first-fruits of the Sanctuaries, and in the possession of the city, against the face of the first-fruits of the Sanctuaries, and against the face of the possession of the city, from the sea, and from those which are by the sea towards the east, and towards the east: and the length shall be as one of the parts from the borders which are by the sea, and the length over the borders which are towards the east of the land. 8. And it shall be for him as a possession in Israel, and the princes of Israel shall no more oppress my people, but the house of Israel shall inherit the land according to their tribes. 9. Thus says the Lord God: Let it suffice you, O princes of Israel: remove injustice and oppression, and execute judgment and justice: take away oppression from my people, says the Lord God. 10. A just balance, and a just measure, and a just chœnix shall be the measure for you: 11. and the chœnix similarly shall be one for receiving the tenth part of a Gomor, the chœnix and the tenth part, and the Gomor shall be as the Ophi, as the Gomor shall be equal. 12. And the weights shall be twenty oboli, twenty shekels, five and twenty shekels, ten and five shekels, a mina shall be yours. 13. And these are the first-fruits which you shall separate: the sixth part of a measure of Gomor of wheat, and the sixth part of an ophi of coro of barley. 14. And the precept of oil, a patera of oil, a tenth part of ten pateras, ten pateras of Gomor, for ten pateras are a gomor. 15. And one sheep from ten sheep, a separation from all, from the flocks of Israel, for sacrifices, and for burnt offerings, and for those of peace, to make atonement for you, says the Lord God. 16. And all the people of the land shall give these first-fruits to the prince of Israel, 17. and through the prince shall be the burnt offerings, and the sacrifices, and the libations in the solemnities, and in the new moons, and in the sabbaths, and in all the solemnities of the house of Israel: he shall perform that which is for sin, and the sacrifice, and the burnt offerings, and those of peace, to make atonement for the house of Israel. 18. Thus says the Lord God: In the first month, on the first of the month, you shall take a young bullock from the herd without blemish to cleanse the Sanctuary. 19. And the priest shall take of the blood of its atonement, and shall put it upon the thresholds of the house, and upon the four corners of the temple, and upon the altar, and upon the thresholds of the gate of the inner court. 20. And thus you shall do in the seventh month, on the first of the month, you shall take from everyone who errs, and from the infant (i.e., the simple): and you shall cleanse the house. 21. And in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, shall be to you the solemnity of the Pasch: for seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. 22. And the prince shall do on that day for himself, and for the house, and for all the people of the land, a young bullock for sin. 23. And for the seven days of the solemnity he shall perform burnt offerings to the Lord, seven bullocks, and seven rams without blemish daily for these seven days, and for sin a he-goat daily, and a sacrifice. 24. And he shall prepare a satum for a bullock, and a satum for a ram, and oil in a satum. 25. And in the seventh month, on the fifteenth day of the month, in the solemnity, you shall do according to these same things for seven days, as those for sin, and as the burnt offerings, and as the satum, and as the oil.

Cap. XLVI. — 1. Thus says the Lord God: The gate which is in the inner court, looking towards the east, shall be shut six days, which are days of work: but on the day of the sabbaths it shall be opened, 2. and the prince shall enter by the way of the porch of the outer gate, and shall stand upon the threshold of the gate, and the priests shall perform his burnt offerings, and those of his peace. 3. And he shall worship before the threshold of the gate, and shall go out, and the gate shall not be shut until evening: and the people of the land shall worship towards the threshold of that gate, in the sabbaths, and in the new moons before the Lord. 4. And the burnt offerings which

the prince shall offer to the Lord on the sabbath day, six lambs without blemish, and a ram without blemish. ^A 5. And a grain offering, an ephah for the ram, and for the lambs a grain offering, as his hand shall suffice, and a hin of oil for every ephah. 6. And in the day of the new moon a young bullock without blemish; and six lambs and a ram shall be without blemish. 7. And he shall offer a grain offering of an ephah for the bullock, and an ephah for the ram, and for the lambs as his hand shall suffice, and a hin of oil for every ephah. 8. And when the prince shall enter, let him go in by the way of the porch of the gate, ^B and let him go out by the same way. 9. And when the people of the land shall enter before the Lord in the solemnities, he that entereth by the way of the gate of the north to worship, shall go out by the way of the gate of the south; and he that entereth by the way of the gate of the south, shall go out by the way of the gate of the north: he shall not return by the way of the gate by which he came in, but shall go out straight before him. 10. And the prince in the midst of them, when they enter, shall enter; and when they go out, shall go out. 11. And in the solemnities and in the feasts, the grain offering shall be an ephah for a bullock, and an ephah for a ram, and for the lambs as his hand shall suffice, and a hin of oil for every ephah. 12. But if the prince make a voluntary burnt offering, or peace offerings voluntarily unto the Lord, one shall open him the gate that looketh towards the east, and he shall make his burnt offering, and his peace offerings, as it is done in the sabbath day: and he shall go out, and the gate shall be shut after he is gone out. 13. And he shall make a lamb of a year old without blemish for a burnt offering daily to the Lord: every morning shall he prepare it. 14. ^C And he shall provide a grain offering upon it, every morning, the sixth part of an ephah, and the third part of a hin of oil to temper the fine flour, as a grain offering to the Lord, by a perpetual ordinance, and it shall be offered continually. 15. Thus shall they prepare the lamb, and the grain offering, and the oil, every morning for a continual burnt offering. 16. Thus saith the Lord God: If the prince give a gift unto any of his sons, it shall be his inheritance, and it shall belong to his sons: it is their possession by inheritance. 17. But if he give a gift of his inheritance to one of his servants, it shall be his to the year of release, and it shall return to the prince; but his inheritance shall go to his sons, it shall be theirs. 18. And the prince shall not take of the people's inheritance by oppression, nor defraud them of their possession: but out of his own possession he shall give an inheritance to his sons, that my people may not be dispersed every man from his possession. 19. And he brought me in by the entry, that was at the side of the gate, into the chambers of the sanctuary for the priests, which looked towards the north: and behold there was a place set apart. 20. And he said: This is the place where the priests shall boil that which is for ignorance, and that which is for sin, and where they shall bake the grain offering, that they may not bring them out into the outer court, to sanctify the people. 21. And he brought me forth into the outer court, and led me about by the four corners of the court: and behold there was a court in every corner of the court. 22. In the four corners of the court were little courts, forty cubits long, and thirty broad: all the four were of one measure. 23. And there was a wall round about them, and kitchens built under the walls round about. 24. And he said to me: These are the houses of the kitchens, wherein the ministers of the house do boil the victims of the people. ^D

CHAPTER XLVII

its drying they shall be given over to salt. 12. And upon the river ^A shall ascend upon its bank on this side and on that, every tree for meat; it shall not grow old upon it, nor shall its fruit fail; it shall give the firstfruits of its newness, because its waters go forth from the Sanctuary, and its fruit shall be for meat, and its leaf for healing. 13. Thus saith the Lord God: These are the boundaries of the land, which you shall possess by inheritance, for the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel, an extension of the measuring line. 14. And you shall possess it, each one like his brother, over which I lifted up my hand to give it to their fathers: and this land shall fall to you in inheritance. 15. And these are the boundaries of the land toward the north, from the great sea by the way that descends and cuts through, the entrance to Sedad, 16. Hamath, Beruthsepharvaim, between the borders of Damascus and between the borders of Hamath, the court of Thichon, which is above the borders of Hauran. 17. These are the boundaries from the sea, from the court of Enan, the borders of Damascus, and those toward the north, above the north, and the border of Asimoth, and the border of the north. 18. Toward the face of the east, between Hauran and between Damascus, and between the land of Gilead, and between the land of Israel, the Jordan divides it upon the sea, which is toward the east of the palm-grove. They who are toward the east. 19. And they who are toward the south and the south-west, from Thæman, and as far as the palm-grove to the water of Mariboth Cadis, extending upon the great sea. 20. This is the part of the south and the south-west; this is the part of the great sea, which divides as far as opposite the entrance of Hamath, as far as its entrance. These are they who are toward the sea of Hamath. 21. And you shall divide this land among you, to the tribes of Israel. 22. You shall cast it into lots for yourselves, and for the strangers lodging in your midst, who have begotten children in your midst, and they shall be to you as those born in the region among the sons of Israel: they shall have with you an inheritance in the midst of the tribes of Israel, 23. and they shall be in the tribe of the strangers, among the strangers who are with them: there you shall give them their inheritance, saith the Lord God.

Chapter XLVIII

the borders of Benjamin, shall be for the prince. 23. And as for the rest of the tribes, from the east side even to the west side, Benjamin shall have one. 24. ON DANIEL: ADMONITION

“I warn the reader,” says Jerome (in his preface to Daniel), “that the churches read Daniel not according to the LXX Interpreters, but according to Theodotion, who was indeed an unbeliever after the coming of Christ, though some say he was an Ebionite, who is a kind of Jew. But Origen also put asterisks in the edition of the Vulgate regarding Theodotion’s work, showing that what was added was missing; and again he marked certain verses with obeli, designating all that was superfluous. And since all the churches of Christ, whether of the Greeks, the Latins, the Syrians, or the Egyptians, read this edition with asterisks and obeli; let the envious pardon my labor, for I wished to have for our own people that which the Greeks read in the editions of Aquila, Theodotion, and Symmachus. And if they, amid such a wealth of teachings, do not despise the studies of Jewish men, why should Latin poverty despise a Christian man, whose intention, if his work displeases, should at least be accepted?” These are the words of Jerome, whose final statement is not without difficulty, which has been examined in the Preliminaries. But since, as he says, the churches read Daniel not according to the LXX, but according to Theodotion, it has happened here that the edition of the Seventy has perished entirely, and only that of Theodotion remains.
