DOGMATIC FRAGMENT

May God make their holy kingdom durable for many years. Secondly: May God make their kingdom, strong by divine protection, divine custody, and divine defense, and holy, durable for many years. Again: May God make our Lord and high priest durable for many years: we say the typical forms, and we dismiss.

SOPHRONII HIEROSOLYMITANI PATRIARCHAE.

I. ^B *In locum hospitibus destinatum.*

You who previously were wandering and treading an unsettled path, whether from traveling by land or from seafaring, now coming here, traveler, stay your feet; if you wish to dwell here, you have an house prepared. If, however, you inquire who built me, it is the old man Eulogius, the good high priest of Pharos of Alexandria.

II. *In Joannem Eleemosynarium Alexandriæ patriarcham.*

O tomb, tell and reveal who the dead man was, and whence he came, and whose son he was, and what his works and riches are that you hold hidden within. This was John, Cypriot by race, son of the noble Stephen; he was the shepherd of Pharos of Alexandria. In riches indeed, he was far wealthier than all whom Cyprus nourished, from his father's fathers and from honest labors. But to tell of all the wondrous works which he performed on earth is not for my mind, nor for any other voice. For he surpassed every man in most illustrious virtues, whoever has seemed to excel others in virtues; and all the ornaments which this city obtained ^C are the firmest monument of his benevolence.

III. *In eumdem.*

The prelate John, excellent among the priests of Pharos, now lies here after his course, near his beloved country. For he received a mortal body, and though he had an incorrupt life, he wrought immortal and infinite deeds upon the earth. ^D
