If He says: "He who sees me, sees also the Father," A listen to Him. If He says: "He who sent me is greater than I," adapt your interpretation to the economy. If He says: "Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?" answer Him: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." By these words, which came from heaven like thunder from the Father, the human race was illuminated, and they recognized the difference between Creator and creature, King and soldier, Maker and work; and, confirmed by faith, they approached through the baptism of John Him who baptizes in the Spirit and fire, Christ our true God; with whom, to the Father, be glory, together with the all-holy and life-giving Spirit; now and always, and for ages of ages. Amen.
FRAGMENT OF SAINT GREGORY THAUMATURGUS
On the Gospel according to Matthew, Chapter VI, Verses 22, 23.
The light of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness?
The sound eye is unfeigned charity, through which, when the body is illuminated, it brings forth its innermost thoughts through the outward members. But the evil eye is feigned charity, which is also called hypocrisy, through which the whole body of a man is darkened. For he ponders within himself deeds worthy of darkness, but B through his outward members he brings forth words that seem to be of light; for they are wolves in truth, clothed in the skins of sheep: men who wash only the outside of the cup and the platter, and do not see that unless the inside of these is cleansed, the outside cannot become clean either. Therefore, clearly refuting them, the Savior says: "If the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness?" That is: if the charity which you think is light is, because of the hypocrisy hidden within you, a work worthy of darkness, what must your manifest transgressions be?
