A I am." That this type looks to His mystery, you may learn from His own words, saying clearly: "As Moses exalted the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be exalted." Now the serpent was of bronze, because of the most pleasant and most sonorous sound of the divine and evangelical preaching. For there is no one who is disobedient to the oracles of Christ, but rather to all the heavenly realm is His mystery proclaimed, and to Him every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Amen.
TWO FRAGMENTS ON NUMBERS
B XVIII, 26. "And you shall take from it a portion." Those who were called to the priesthood according to the law of Moses received tithes from the sons of Israel as a portion and inheritance of God. But they themselves used to bring the tenth part to the one who leads and holds the primacy of the priesthood—that is, to Aaron; who was indeed established as a type of Christ, not ministering in the first tabernacle which had its standing there, but in the inner and hidden one.
XX, 8. "Take the rod, and gather the congregation." Observe that, to strengthen their faith, He calls to his mind the memory of the prodigies performed in Egypt, saying: "Take in thy hand the rod wherewith thou smotest the river." And soon after: Christ is likened to the Rock because of His solidity and immovability.
