CONCERNING THE SCHOLIA ON THE AREOPAGITE EDITED IN THIS VOLUME
Whether the scholia on the Areopagite attributed to the Patriarch Germanus—which in part still seem to lie hidden in manuscript codices—have the elder Germanus as their author, as Baronius thinks at the year 730, or the younger one, is not the time to dispute now. However, in a Vatican codex I read this inscription placed before the scholia: "Whatever has a number attached, those are the scholia of the Patriarch Germanus; but those which lack a numerical mark have Maximus the Monk as their author." Nevertheless, there in the margin, this annotation is made by the scribe: "Forgive me, brother, for I have placed both authors under one number in this book." I observed this all the more willingly because the distinguished Jacopo Morelli, in the *Greek Library of Saint Mark*, p. 89, had already prudently doubted whether the distinction of the scholia of Maximus and Germanus on the Areopagite was correct. — MAI, *Spicileg.
