O maiden, in gender and sex a woman, but in soul a man! O maiden to be extolled with a double name, for you are numbered in the choir of virgins and the choir of martyrs!—a maiden so self-controlled that you did not even allow the unbridled judge the opportunity to behold you! Let us therefore imitate the temperance of this maiden, and let us rise up against our own pleasures, breaking the impulse of intemperance, and let us corroborate our soul in piety; let us A avoid temptations, and when the time is right, let us prove ourselves not cast down but bold; finally, let us mortify our members which are upon the earth, so that the Lord himself may render this humble body of ours like His own, and transfer it into that state, that He may communicate the form of His own body to it: to whom be glory and empire, forever. B Hanc homiliam Antiochiae habuit Chrysostomus paucis post Concionem in S. Pelagiam diebus. De anno ne conjectura quidem quidvis statuere possumus, cum nulla hinc temporis nota erui possit. Festum S. Ignatii celebratur apud nos 4 Februarii, apud Graecos autem vicesima die Decembris. Quia vero ea ipsa dies 20 Decembris notatur etiam in Mss. antiquissimis, verisimile prorsus videtur ea ipsa die habitam fuisse hanc homiliam: non autem 17 Decembris, qua die translatio ejus celebratur in Ecclesia Romana, ut recte notat Fronto Ducaeus, qui tres ejus translationes commemorat, primam qua Roma Antiochiam, ut putabatur, a discipulis qui ejus acta scripserunt, Reliquiae ejus translatae sunt: nam Chrysostomo in hac homilia atque Hieronymo testibus, ossa ejus Antiochiae quiescebant, et quidem extra portam Daphniticam in Coemeterio, ait Hieronymus de Scriptoribus Ecclesiasticis.
